Anorexia

Anorexia is an extremely dangerous and destructive disease. And unfortunately, it is on the rise in women, adolescents and children. As shocking as it may seem, anorexia is now being diagnosed in children as young as six years old. That’s right – little girls who are years away from puberty are starving themselves nearly to death. Conversely, middle-aged women experiencing menopause are also becoming addicted to the same behaviors.

In order for the diagnosis of anorexia to be made, certain criteria must be present. These criteria are listed below. A list of warning signs is also included. If you suspect a friend or family member may be struggling with anorexia, check out this information.

Criteria

  • Low Weight
  • Weight Phobia: Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
  • Body Image Issues: Believing you are fat when you are not, making your weight the only thing you judge yourself on, denying the medical seriousness of your low weight.
  • Loss of menstrual period: For women, who have reached puberty, missing at least three menstrual cycles in a row.
  • Warning Signs for Adolescents & Adults

  • Loss of menstrual period
  • Dieting obsessively when not overweight
  • Claiming to feel “fat” when overweight is not a reality
  • Preoccupation with food, calories, nutrition, and/or cooking
  • Denial of hunger
  • Excessive exercising, being overly active
  • Frequent weighing
  • Strange food-related behaviors
  • Episodes of binge-eating
  • 15% or more below normal body weight/rapid weight loss
  • Depression
  • Slowness of thought/memory difficulties
  • Hair loss
  • In children, any combination of these symptoms should be considered serious. An immediate evaluation by an eating disorder professional or physician is recommended. It’s important to remember, the faster treatment is sought, the better the outcome is for most patients. Some people have hair that gets thicker during pregnancy, and others are not so lucky. Make sure you're taking your vitamins and don't let it bother you.

I used this shampoo for a couple a months and it worked really well, making my black hair even blacker and stopping the excessive shedding. But, I stopped using it because there were rumors that it had carcinogens in its list of ingredients. I advise people to do some research on it before making the decision to use it. I will wait a little bit longer for the rumors to clear up before deciding to use it again.

You threw me off at the first sentence:

"I stared at my father's casket mournfully, looking around I saw all of the pathetic faces around me."

Which one is she doing? Staring at the casket or looking around? Such inconsistency in the first sentence would urge me to stop without going further.

Compulsive gamblers aren't usually rich. They're actually usually poor and in debt because of their psychological attachment to the thrill of gambling. Gambling is something that almost never pays off, especially for the compulsive ones who don't know when to stop. I feel like this was just inattention to detail. Maybe make it sound like he struck it rich DESPITE his gambling addiction. Years of debt finally paid off with a single huge jackpot?

Or maybe he wasn't a compulsive gambler, but was just a pro poker player? That's like the difference between someone who overeats and someone who cooks for a living.

Introduce your character's name when Aubrey says hi.

      —-

If you want us to hate this main character, you're doing a good job in the 3rd paragraph. I wouldn't root for this character in a million years. Any sympathy I might have had for her dad dying is totally gone.

I get that you're trying to show that she's vapid and self-centered, and that she'll probably learn her lesson during the story, but if you want me to follow her through the book, you have to make me understand why she is the way she is. Let me see how she sees the world without forcing her judgment down my throat. Tell me all the observations she makes, but don't tell me what to think. Like this:

"Here's the thing about Aubrey: I wouldn't talk to her even if she was the last person in the world. She wore makeup that looked like it was from the dollar store and her smile was filled with crooked teeth. A price tag hung off her dress, probably to return it after the funeral was over. Aubrey's dad and my dad knew each other from the casinos. My dad was a lot better at winning than hers. I can't understand why my father would become friends with someone like him."

Let ME decide how to feel about Aubrey and about your main character. Give me clues and I'll make the judgments. This will keep me from hating your main character and make me want to follow her through the book, despite how bad of a person she is.
