What do you think causes eating disorders?

What does everyone here think are the main causes of eating disorders? Try to explain your answer.

low self esteem brought on by negative life events that are beyond one's control. i believe eating disorders are a way to control one's life that is out of control. to feel that you have no control over the happenings in your life can definitely have a negative effect on your self esteem. not everyone has the same reaction to events like this in their life. some people are actually well and healthfully equipped to deal with stress and trauma. some people are not and there's always that line that may be crossed. some people drink, some people gamble, some people use drugs, some people starve themselves, some people overeat, some people cut themselves….etc. etc….

There are lots of internet forums where people discuss eating disorders and their causes. Some of the forums where this comes up include medhelp.org, answers.google.com, and right here at answers.yahoo.com. The forums are a good source of information, because people give their own first-person experiences. I think there are several factors 1) society pushing skinny and tan is healthy.2) low self respect and self esteem 3) the way you are treated by others fat children are picked on and so are skinny but fat kids get more torture from NORMAL kids.

Well, I guess it's possible that a small percentage have something wrong with their brain, like a chemical imbalance. I think the rest are having some kind of issues. I know a friend of mine's daughter had anorexia. He parents were having marital difficulties and she is close to her mother and she was also away at school. She describes it as the only thing she is able to control.

I believe obesity is also an eating disorder, though most don't classify it that way. I think that can come from a lack of control in one's life or being told that you aren't good enough so you prove it. Or some use food as a drug to make them feel better, though like alcohol and drugs, they feel worse after wards. I think most are predisposed to the possibility and then life situations trigger it.

Women! Women are harder on other women than men ever are, people always say the media, and I agree but it's women who support the media that's hard on women. My girlfriend and every other woman I know talk shit on other women. "look what she's wearing, she's too fat to wear that, she looks like a slut" as well as "she's pretty, I wish I looked like that, I want her butt". You guys are crazy, I don't know any man who reads trashy magazines or really care that much in general. You guys worry about that stuff way too much and can be way too catty. News flash: If all of you weighed 300 lbs. we'd still want to have sex with you! It's your guys' fault men even have ideals, without you we'd all be drunk, hungry, horny and homeless!

most general underlying psychological / emotial reason. eating is associated with comfort, punishment, self control and self esteem. bulemia/anorexia can lead to starvation and electrolyte disturbances which can lead to death. very complicated emotional problem which longer goes on, obviously longer to get help with. usually takes a lot of support, friends, family and outside help. and of course you have to realize you have a problem with it.
