Whenever I've read about self mutilation, eating disorders have come up a lot as another form of self injury. So do people injure themselves because they have eaten too much or is it that both practices are self destructive? I am just curious about the link between the two.
This is just an educated guess.
People who have eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia are probably in pain, starving yourself hurts. When people cut themselves they release endorphines, it's like your body's own personal pain killers. So while cutting does hurt, the ultimate result is pain relief.

Generally, people who self-mutilate and have eating disorders begin these behaviors because they feel they have no control over anything in their lives. They find something they can control (what they eat or the ability to feel pain) and indulge these behaviors to feel that sense of control.

If you don't eat that's an eating disorder and it kills you. It messes up your organs and makes you sick. So it is obviously self mutilation.

They both fall under the category of self-harm, they are closely related for they both have the same characteristics in the individual and both have a tendency to occur simultaneously.

Self-hatred seems to be a common theme there.

I think the two are completely unrelated. A person with a ED is already injuring themselves without knowing it. A person who self injures does it for other reasons. However, there are many cases when a person self injures and has a ED.

it all comes down to shame about the physical being…anger towards your physical body and displeasure with your appearance…people who start off being anorexic or bulemic often times dont resort to intentional self-injury…but people who are initally self-injurers will often also resort to starving themselves as another method of self-harm…

both are caused by a) a hatred of oneself, b) a feeling of isolation/that nobody cares for them, or c) a feeling that they have no control.
hatred of oneself: they feel they must be punished for being so horrible, and they believe that they don't deserve to indulge in good things like food.
isolation: they feel like nobody cares for them, and they want people to notice them just once. they do it because of a lack of others' attention.
control: they feel that they have no control over their own life, but they at least have control over how healthy/damaged their body is, or what they eat. even in babies, some babies refuse food because they find that they have power over what they eat, at least. they want to see how far they can go with that.
most people are a mix of these causes. there are a few more causes between self-mutilation and ed's, but these are probably the most common.

They both come under 'self harm'. You can have one with out the other or you can have both.
I use to cut myself and I know when I was at my worst I was so occupied with cutting I didn't even have time to eat. It didn't come into my thoughts at all. But some people can be so occupied with having an eatting disorder it is all they think about so they don't have time to self mutilate.
I have a friend who is bulimic (receiving treatment) and she cut for a small period of time before she started binging and purging.
When you notice one of these behaviours it is so important to find help asap. It's such a good indicator that there is something wrong.
They are both coping mechanisms and cries for help. So yes I would say there is a link.

Speaking as someone who use to cut myself and have both eating disorders I have found that the cutting of the skin helped me to feel pain because I was unable to do so. The eating disorders were a way of changing the way that I look. I also wanted to relieve the emotional pain that I had. It is different for everyone but the ultimate reasons have to do with controll or being out of controll and wanting everything to stop.

people that dont eat to lose weight are mutilating their intelligence. Same as people who over eat and blame it on depression. that's the only link i can see. when i hear about self-mutilation, i think of them really gross videos on places like youtube.you know what videos im talking about too.
