You really have no clue what you're talking about, first of all a lot of girls with eating disorders are not trying to make themselves prettier a big majority were sexually abused and use it as a means to "stop abuse from happening" they may think if they get too skinny then nobody will ever want them therefore they won't get raped or molested, it is also about control, you feel in control with it, which of course it takes hold and controls you, this brings me to self harm, a lot of times self harm and eating disorders go hand in hand, these things are both about control. Most people with eating disorders don't go to pro ana or mia websites they go to forums to get better, they support them but don't encourage the disorder, also guys have eating disorders too so don't section it all on girls. I hope you'll read up on it to learn more about it so you aren't naive in the matter, just search on google.
References :
Just to get attention? I think not. EDs are so very serious. It's a coping mechanism. Not a good one. But a way of dealing with things. I don't think you understand eating disorders. At 10 years old, I developed anorexia. I spent the majority of my days crying, starving, in hospitals, attached to tubes. Was I doing that for attention? Anorexia, Bulimia, EDNOS, Binge Eating Disorders, and compulsive eating disorders are all life threatening. Most people with EDs care so little about them selves and are not at all shallow. They just want something that they can count on to make them feel better. Where does their low self esteem and bad ways of dealing come from? Psychological problems, family problems, school problems, and relationship problems. I agree, Pro-ana and Pro-ED websites are horrible. Most people on there are just looking to lose weight. They think EDs are glamorous. Some people on there are just looking for someone to talk to. Some people on those sites have eating disorders and are crying for help.
References :
I think you are wrong. Eating disorders can cause serious health problems and even death.

If it isn't a "real problem", how does it do that?

If it is for attention, why are most people with eating disorders very secretive about it?

Yes, there is a fad where celebrities talk about personal problems, and sometimes I wonder if they are just making it up just for publicity. And it does make real problems seem trivial.

Forget those self-centered famous people. Real people (mostly girls) are dying from eating disorders all the time.

Depression is the leading cause of eating disorders, the eating disorder is just the manifestation of the depression. Eating disorders are the way that some people deal with thier anxiety and emotional pain the way that other's turn to drugs or alcohol. And eating disorders aren't just anorexia or bulimia it's also and addiction to food that causes a person to weight over 300+ pounds. How can you say that eating disorders aren't a psychological disorder when people die from it and it's not only girls who suffer from the ones that you mentioned. Boys are also prey to them but you hear mostly about the girls so it's hard for boys to find the help that they need.
References :
I think it's an attention grabber at first then they get somehow addicted to it, like---maybe addicted to the attention....I DO know I agree with you that these 'girls' are wasting taxpayer dollars when people w/real problems could be being helped, but Brittiny has to be as skinny as Felicity, and all that crap.
References :
I think you should re-evaluate your attitude, because you're quite mistaken. Eating disorders are quite serious problems, and while some people do foolishly attempt them for weight loss purposes, the vast majority of people really do suffer from them.

Having any sort of eating disorder, from anorexia and bulimia to compulsive overeating disorder and EDNOS, is actually a double whammy. It's a rather devastating physical manifestation of a deeply seeded psychological problem, usually stemming from low self-worth or from control issues.

It is NOT about gaining attention... for many, it is about punishing oneself or attempting to gain some small bit of control in a life that feels otherwise disorderly.

EDs are true psychological problems. While there are indeed some celebrities who are foolish about their attitudes, that is the case for many other diseases as well; consider how popular it is to say, "I'm depressed." even if they're not, making light of another truly debilitating mental condition.

I suspect you have never had a family member or friend suffer from an eating disorder. I have... my best friend was anorexic, and another nearly died from bulimia. So until you have spent hours at their bedside crying and listening and studying, I'd advise you to keep your vitriol to yourself.
References :
They are real and caused by the false sense of beauty that is portrayed in the media. If it were not for the you have to be a size 2 and look like this to be beautiful then many that have these eating disorders would not have them. Some still would but I think that if people were able to see real people on tv instead of stick figures who walk around hungry then many people would be happy with there bodies.

I just saw and read the following talking about how so many actresses are walking around hungry
http://movies.msn.com/movies/galleryfeature/celebrity-thin/?GT1=7701

read thru the info and expand it to see all that is written to go with each picture.
References :
About 25% of women will suffer from some form of disordered eating pattern at some point in their life. However only about 2% of women will go on to develop a true eating disorder.

The girls that frequent those pro-ED websites most likely dont have eating disorders. What is scary however is the few that are or the few that do have an eating disorder who happen to surf onto one of those sites. It may only make their illness worse.

Is it a real illness? It is a mental disorder and a very serious disorder for those that do in fact have it. An anorexic who does not get treatment may very well starve themselves to death. A woman that vomits constantly can go into cardiac arrest. It is a serious illness. However, like I said, it usually does not progress to that level in most women.
References :
I disagree. Anorexia is merely a symptom of an internal crisis, where the person feels unable to control their life, and the only place where they feel they have any control at all is their food intake.
References :
My teen was anorexic and Multiple Personality and depressed
