Would you blame the media for Eating disorders among young adults?

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Would you blame media pressure and such for eating disorders among people aged from like, 10-18?

Yes, 100%.

I'm 13 years old in High School, and I haven't ate a proper, proper meal in weeks, months even. I eat healthy for breakfast, hardly nothing for lunch, and basically crackers with some tiny pathetic topping on top for dinner. Whenever I eat something, I have to check the calories in it, then measure how much I eat, and I calorie count everyday, and spend at least 2 hours a day exercising. Sure, this may not be so bad compared to some people in the rest of the world and their eating disorders, but listen to what some of my friends do.

One of my friends hasn't ate a proper meal in months, and I mean months. It was probably Christmas. She eats less than 500 calories a day, and for the past few weeks she hasn't had any energy at all and just mopes around at school. She lost 2 stone in 2 weeks and it's as if she has a fear of eating food.

Another one of my friends doesn't eat breakfast, has a cereal bar for lunch, and then if she has dinner at all, she has a small (and I mean small) salad. She gets her energy from one tiny pot of ice cream a day.

And that's just three of us. I think the media is a life ruining thing that puts so many people through things that no one should have to go through. A few years ago when I was a kid I really didn't understand about eating disorders and how someone would not want to eat, but now I do understand fully, and it's horrible. In my eyes, everyone who's career is associatted with the media is a sinful, sinful person.

Does anyone have an idea for a agrumenative paper on either Eating Disorders or Organ Donation?

Friday, March 6th, 2009

I need a topic for my research paper. I'm not sure whether to agrue eating disorders or organ donating and I'm not sure what I would actually agrue about either one of them so I need so help. Other ideas are open, but those are the two traditional controversial topics I'm really interested in.
Thanks

Ideas for an organ donation paper:

1. Should the U.S. switch to an opt-out system rather than our current opt-in system, whereby everyone is automatically a donor unless they remove themselves from the registry.

2. Should the government pay for organ donations, to encourage donations? Is this ethical?

3. Should organ donation be taught in health classes so that every citizen is informed about it?

4. Should people be allowed to be living donors to people they don't know? What kinds of problems could this cause? What would be the benefits?

5. Currently UNOS (the keepers of the national waiting list) allows for 5% of organs recovered to be transplanted into foreign nationals (people who are not American citizens) – why should this or why shouldn't this be allowed?

6. Should people who register to be organ donors get some kind of a gift? Could it be seen as unethical to give something in exchange for someone becoming a donor?

Dieticians – Internists – Is kwashiorkor a possible symptom of our poor diet – too much white flour / corn syr?

Friday, March 6th, 2009

I think many Americans are starving themselves because of their daily reliance on white flour for sustenance, whether rich or poor. Does white flour inhibit good digestion of other more protein rich foods? (Look at all the protruding bellies.) I'm looking at something that indicated that in a report as follows:

"Conditions listing Kwashiorkor as a symptom may also be potential underlying causes of Kwashiorkor. Our database lists the following as having Kwashiorkor as a symptom of that condition:
Alcoholism
Amphetamine abuse
Amyloidosis AL
Anorexia Nervosa
Blind loop syndrome
Boyd-Stearns syndrome
Brinton disease
Classic galactosemia
Cocaine fetopathy
Congenital short bowel
Congenital sucrose-isomaltose malabsorption
Cutaneous photosensitivity colitis, lethal
Cystic Fibrosis
Epidermolysis bullosa, junctional
Finnish nephrosis syndrome
Follicular hamartoma – alopecia – cystic fibrosis
Gastrointestinal amyloidosis
Hereditary amyloidosis
Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Intestinal epithelial dysplasia
Intractable diarrhea with enterocytes assembly abnormalities, congenital, familial
Juvenile tropical pancreatitis syndrome
Microsporidiosis
Obal syndrome
Opisthorchiasis
Pancreatic insufficiency
Pancreatic Islet Cell Cancer
Patau syndrome
Sandifer syndrome
Self Harm
Short Bowel Syndrome

Protein-calorie malnutrition: Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))
Both kwashiorkor (edematous PCM) and marasmus (nonedematous PCM) are common in underdeveloped countries and in areas in which dietary amino acid
content is insufficient to satisfy growth requirements. Kwashiorkor typically occurs at about age 1, after infants are weaned from breast milk to a protein-deficient diet of starchy gruels or sugar water, but it can develop at any time during the formative years. Marasmus affects infants ages 6 to 18 months as a result of breast-feeding failure, or a debilitating condition such as chronic diarrhea.
In industrialized countries, PCM may occur secondary to chronic metabolic disease that decreases protein and calorie intake or absorption, or trauma that increases protein and calorie requirements. In the United States, PCM is estimated to occur to some extent in 50% of elderly people in nursing homes. Those who aren’t allowed anything by mouth for an extended period are at high risk of developing PCM. Conditions that increase protein-calorie requirements include severe burns and injuries, systemic infections, and cancer (accounts for the largest group of hospitalized patients with PCM). Conditions that cause defective utilization of nutrients include malabsorption syndrome, short-bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.

Interesting read and yes, you have a valid point there.
I believe when manufactures add or take products out to produce a longer shelf life, we become unwittingly victims.
I also will state that man's desire to consume these products in large quantities also makes a statement to how well they care about their own bodies and therefore allowing them to become the blimps, encourage laziness and less outgoing as a person.
I find these chemicals are foreign to the human body and instead of helping ones digestion, actually does the opposite. It promotes build up and therefore a blockage to the body operating normally.
There is where the many problems of the body lies in wait for us. Some times quicker then we ever could realize.
It is sad that many of these traits are passed on during breast feeding and actual Development inside a mother's womb. However i wonder if this wasn't all a design by human engineering to cause a decrease in the human population or is it just a consequence of a "on Demand" society.
I learned a lot about nutritional values when i searched out about diets for myself. There are some products now that i will never eat again
Great question and deserving my further attention as well as others.
