Is fasting a good way to lose weight?

ok before you freak out and tell me im crazy, read the rest. i know what anorexia and have done many projects/research on it and in know weigh do i intend on starving myself although news reports and even some weight loss doctors claim that if you fast for lets say a week, you can lose weight (with exercise of course) and clean toxins and harmful elements out of your body… now many of you are probably saying "starving makes you gain weight" but if you gently come out of the fast exp. eating fruits and veggies in small portions you can keep your weight under control and you will not stretch your stomach…. please answer i need to know (from past fasters) if this will work and approximately how much weight (with 1 hr of exercise everyday) will i lose in 7 days(1 week) thank you

What you need to do is start keeping a food diary, outlining what you eat, what times and if there were any emoitions behind it.

Next, take a look at the websites below for exercises. There are photos to show you exactly what to do. Good luck :)

I’m sorry, but fasting is extreme. The keys to health are balance and moderation. You don’t need to detox, just stop toxing.

A lot of the answers you will see here will tell you to buy some sort of supplement. Don’t take diet pills. They are unnatural and dangerous. It is not the lack of pills that got you heavy; that is not the fix you need. It was (most likely) improper diet and lifestyle that got you the extra weight. That is the fix you need.

The best way to lose weight is through the principles of balance and moderation. You need to eat good food and eat enough of it.

Shoot to lose 1-3 pounds per week. No more. Don’t go hungry, just keep yourself filled with good, natural foods.

Don’t worry about calories. Caloric science is flawed for several reasons. 1) it assumes 100% absorption, but we all absorb and excrete different amounts; 2) It assumes all calories are processed the same, but calories from natural sources are burned more slowly and evenly than from refined sources; 3) It assumes that the amount of energy released by combustion (burning) in a lab is the same amount of energy released when the food is broken down enzymatically in the gut; 4) It assumes that the same exercise done by different people will burn the same amount of exercise, but different exercises will be harder or easier for different people; 5) Correlation does not prove causation. People who are heavier eat more calories: did the calories make them heavy, or did being heavy make them need more calories? Maybe they are both symptoms of a deeper problem. 6) people in China consume 25-40% more calories; even the sedentary office workers have more calories and less obesity than we.

Asian cultures have long ago figured out how we should be eating, Ever since we have looked to science to tell us how to eat we have seen more obesity and diet-related disease. If we eat like the Asians, we will look like the Asians. This doesn’t mean you have to eat Asian food, just adhere to the principles that are common to the different cultures and cuisines.

You should eat mostly vegetables, mostly cooked (cold and raw foods slow your metabolism because they need to be cooked in your stomach) and a wide variety, mostly fresh and in-season and local, simple grains (more rice, less bread), some fruit, a little meat, no dairy (it’s for infants and grows tissue), and no artificial foods.

Avoid artificial foods, including sugar substitutes. Don’t worry about calories, fat, protein, carbs, nor any one component of food.

There are several books that explain this strategy of eating. "The Asian Diet: simple secrets for eating right, losing weight, and being well" by Bussell explains the diet and its rationale. "The Asian Diet: get slim and stay slim the Asian way" by Tran has recipes that adhere to the principles. "The China Study" by Campbell has the science behind the recommendation.

Get some exercise every day, but not too much and not always the same exercise. Start slow and work your way up. Calisthenics are great, as is Tai Chi. Walking and swimming are also great. All other exercises should be in a wide rotation.

Follow the principles of balance and moderation and you’ll be fine. Most diets in America are not balanced nor moderate.

    well yes and no

[expect to use around 1 -2 pounds daily, but becareful!]

yes because if you do it for the RIGHT AMOUNT OF TIME then you are able to rid toxins and cleanse the body, which takes around 14 days, it takes mental power to an extreme, but if you want to lose the weight than you should slowly ad more physicaly activity like walk 10 minutes a day before breakfast would be best.or run 7 minutes a day. small things.

The faster you lose weight the faster you can gain it back.

it takes time so dont succumb to fasting because its only their for you to cleanse the body and its recommended to be done about once or twice a year. but i highly suggest otherwise, if you arent used to it you may end up binging or DYING..

    GOOD LUCK!!! :)

I have fasted before, not gained it back, & lost more weight after it, so…
BUT, I am constantly dizzy, I don’t lose as much, & I get tired from standing up sometimes.

Don’t exercise if you fast. It’s already dangerous enough. You could faint while exercising and hit your head on the way down. Plus, you will be super tired all the time from lack of food.

In a week, depending on your current weight, you could lose about 10 lbs.
The first few days you can lose 1-5 lbs. Most likely 2-3 lbs.
The days after that 1 lb.

But, and I stress this, do not exercise much, if at all.

Yes, you’ll lose weight. But most of it will be water weight. When you start eating again, if you go in small portions gradually getting back to normal, it will seem fine at first. But like any diet, if you go back to eating your old ways, it will get back on.

Also, I have heard about fasting releasing toxins and all that stuff. Don’t bother with it. There are even more studies out there that prove you don’t need to fast to "cleanse" yourself.

I’ve never fasted, but I’ve restricted far too much. And you gain the weight back, no matter how gradual you try to be.

You’re definitely not crazy, this is a good question. However, I’d have to say that fasting isn’t your best option for losing weight. There are much better options when it comes to losing weight. You need a balanced diet and exercise to stay healthy while losing weight. I would suggest looking into Bill Phillip’s Body for Life system or another healthy diet. Talk to your physician before starting any diet program, especially if you’re considering fasting. Your doctor will probably want to keep your condition in check to ensure that you won’t become sick or suffer from any ill effects. Here’s an article on fasting diets I found from WebMD, and good luck on losing the weight!!

    Fasting Diets

Just about every religion has periods of fasting as a show of faith or penitence. Fasting has also historically been a means to express political views and a form of protest.

Though it may not be the most practical — or safest — diet, some people use fasting as a way to lose weight or to cleanse the body of toxins, although experts say our bodies are perfectly equipped with organs that remove toxins. How fasting is used for weight loss varies by diet. Some fasting diets involve drinking nothing but water or eating only raw foods for a period of one or more days, while others restrict food on alternate days. Certain fasting diets allow liquids like water, juice, or tea, while others dramatically cut calories but don’t eliminate food altogether.
Does Fasting Really Help You Lose Weight?

When you fast, your body is forced to dip into energy stores to get the fuel it needs to keep going, so you will lose weight. The big question is how long you’ll keep that weight off. Because food was often scarce for our ancestors, our bodies have been genetically programmed to combat the effects of fasting. When you eat less food, your metabolism slows down to conserve energy. Than when you go back on your old diet, your lowered metabolism may cause you to store more energy, meaning that you’ll probably gain back the weight you lost and possibly even put on more weight when eating the same calories you did before the fast.

As you fast, your body will adjust by reducing your appetite, so you’ll initially feel less hungry. But once you’ve stopped fasting, your appetite hormones will kick back into gear and you may actually feel hungrier and be more likely to binge.

Research has shown that fasting on alternate days can help people lose weight, but not for long. In one study, people who followed an alternate-day fasting diet shed pounds, even when they ate all they wanted on the non-fasting days. However, they couldn’t maintain the weight loss over time.
    Can Fasting Detoxify the Body?

Some fasting diets claim that they can cleanse the body of impurities. However, there’s no evidence that fasting detoxifies your body, or that your body even needs to be detoxified. It is naturally designed to remove toxins through the skin (sweating), liver, colon, and kidneys.
Could Fasting Help You Live Longer?

Studies of fasting in both rodents and humans appear to indicate a connection between calorie restriction and longevity. In one study of overweight men and women, a calorie-restricted diet improved markers of aging, such as insulin level and body temperature.

Fasting might also improve longevity by delaying the onset of age-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s heart disease, and diabetes. One study showed that skipping meals once a month as the Mormons do reduces the risk of clogged arteries (the buildup of plaque that can lead to heart attacks and strokes). However, it’s not clear from this research whether fasting alone or the Mormons’ generally healthier lifestyle (they also abstain from coffee, alcohol, and smoking) is responsible for the improved heart health.

Researchers don’t yet know whether the effects of fasting translate into an actual increase in lifespan, because they haven’t followed people for long enough periods of time.

    Is Fasting Safe?

Fasting for a day or two likely won’t hurt people who are generally healthy. However, fasting for long periods of time can be harmful. Your body needs a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food to stay healthy. Not getting enough of these nutrients can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, constipation, dehydration, gallstones, and cold intolerance. It’s possible to die if you fast too long.

Even short-term fasting isn’t recommended for people with diabetes, because it can lead to dangerous dips and spikes in blood sugar. Women who are pregnant or nursing, or anyone with a chronic disease, also shouldn’t fast.

Before you go on any type of new diet, particularly one that involves fasting, talk to your doctor to find out whether it’s safe and appropriate for you. Also ask your doctor to refer you to a registered dietitian, who can show you how to design a healthy diet plan.

I don’t think fasting is good at all because you are denying your heart and brain the nutrients it needs, but yes, it’s possible to lose weight as a teenager, but you have to eat to lose weight or your body holds onto all its fat because it thinks you are starving it.

What Should I Start To Do First?

? Have you ever thought about getting a binder (notebook) you can decorate and fill it with page dividers? 1) Magazine Pages from Fitness Magazines 2) Good Recipes 3) Upper Body Exercises 4) Lower Body Exercises 5) Charts 6)News Clippings, Emails, Web Pages, Fitness Magazine Exercises, etc., and decorate it up.

How Much Water Do I Need To Drink Each Day?

? On a better note, here’s something to follow that keeps you eating healthy while dropping unnecessary fat. There is a formula to follow for how much water to drink for your current weight:

? Your Weight Times (.5) Equals Divided By 8oz (or 1 Cup) Equals # Cups of Water/Day

    • 100lbs x .5 = 50/8 =6 Cups of Water/day
    • 120lbs x .5 = 60/8 = 7 Cups of Water/day
    • 135lbs x .5 = 67.5/8 = 8 Cups of Water/day
    • 150lbs x .5 = 75/8 = 9 Cups of Water/day
    • 175lbs x .5 = /8 = 11 Cups of Water/day
    • 200lbs x .5 = 100/8 = 12.5 Cups Water/day

Why Do I Need To Drink Water To Lose Weight?

? Water is essential for overall health, not to mention, its natural appetite suppressant.Water also plays an important role as in metabolizing food and helps you to burn more calories than if you didn’t drink water.

? It’s also is important to know that you can die from an overdose of water. Water is extremely dangerous when you are only drinking water instead of eating and drinking in moderation.

? Hyponatremia is the result of too much water in your system to cause an imbalance in your electrolytes which in turn would result in excessive swelling of the heart, lungs, and brain.

    http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/hydrationandfluid/a/Hyponatremia.htm

? The most dangerous consumption of water is done when the person tries to drink their daily limits of water all in one sitting. Water must be spread out throughout the day in order for it to circulate throughout your system.

What’s the Easiest Substitution To Start?

? Let’s start with the easiest of substitutions where people will probably not notice that you are making changes to your diet:

? Week 1. Stop all soda pop, juice, etc. No slurpees, milkshakes, floats. Drink only water or crystal lite as a substitute for pop, juice, slurpees, frappaccinos, frozen mocha drinks, etc.

? Do not use hot chocolate, tea or coffee as a substitute for water as the chemicals used to flavor these drinks take all the good qualities out of the water and leave empty calories and dehydration.

? The reason you are substituting the water in place of the other drinks, is to help you to regain your own self control. In approximately 3 months, you’ll be able to reinstate some of them into your diet in moderation and as a treat for yourself in the future.
Do I Need To Go To The Gym?

? No, what you need to achieve right now is can be done away from a gym. In order to help get your metabolism up, it’s imperative that you get your heart rate up in any way possible. If you are extremely overweight and suffer from sore knees, then you need to get yourself a bathing suit or layered workout wear to use in the swimming pool; if you do not have a public pool and you know someone who has one, then sit down and ask them if they would allow you to borrow time in their pool and schedule a time for 7 days in the week; a low depth river, lake or swimming pond will work in ideal temperatures. Another option would be to use a small indoor trampoline to do ‘rebounding’. This will also up your metabolism.

? Walk once around the block or swim one lap each day to raise metabolism (5 days unless you enjoy 7 days) If your block is more than a mile long then only walk half or substitute with another activity equivalent. If you have a hill or hiking trail, then try to motivate yourself to do it once a week the first month. *Do not exceed 2 hours in the beginning.

What’s the Next Substitution In The Beginning?

? This is one of the most difficult substitution or limitation for many teens who have gotten into the habit of sitting down and snacking.

? Week 2. Stop all breads, buns, cakes, muffins, etc.. No Chips, Nachos, Cookies, Cheezies, Snack Chips of any sort, Wheat Thins, Rice Cakes, Triscuits, Tea Biscuits, English Muffins, Foccascia, etc.

? Many teens fill their emptiness with sweet bread-like products which includes peanut butter and honey or jam toast when others will reach for saltier snacks which includes pretzels.

? It’s difficult to break the habit of snacking at the movies, watching home Dvd’s, sports games and their finals, as well as, baby showers and parties. Eat ahead of the event so that you feel full.

    ? Drink more water whi
