How to overcome severe social anxiety, when you got it after stopping anxiety meds, and have a stutter?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I get very very nervous around people i don’t know, and I would really really like to be more social but i end up getting anxiety about it, due to my stutter, as i do have a severe stutter. I never had social anxiety till after stopping the anti anxiety meds, in which i was on for general anxiety disorder.

Hi B,
I am so glad you got off the meds. All the things I have read about meds for anxiety and other disorders will just add other medical problems, like RLS.
It is not easy, but make your self get out at least three times a week,, in a mall, movie, park, just get out. Everyone has some kind of problem, and remember you are very smart. By typing this in here shows me you are brave. This place people are so judgemental, so if you get dumb responce in here just tell your self that person has a problem or he or she would not put you down, that should make you feel better knowing you are not along.
Good luck!!

ED help please?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I have had Bulumia when i was 8 until i was 11 so roughly 3 years. I relapsed when i was 13 for a few weeks but got back on track. Approximately 4 weeks the relapse was for. I then relapsed last year for about 3 months. I have always been overweight during my life so no one could tell or knew about it. Recently, now 16 i have been getting the reoccuring urges to start throwing up again. I get this guilt when i eat like i really need to purge to make myself feel better. I have cut myself for the past few years. I know i am overweight but i feel like i am like obese or like 70lbs heavier, I really don’t know what to do and what you think is wrong with me? I weigh 147.7lbs and am 5′5

My ex girlfriend weight about 150 and she was about 5′6", and honestly she looked great. She wasn’t comfortable with her weight either, but I think that probably safe to say about any teenage girl. You need to build more confidence in yourself because you really aren’t that overweight. I’d also suggest getting into a regular exercise routine if you aren’t already, it makes you feel better about yourself, and it’s good for your long term health whether you need to lose weight or not. Really the biggest part is just convincing yourself what a reasonable target weight is and then taking it step by step to get there.

Anorexia treatment (i finally saw a doctor)?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I know i’m anorexic, and i saw a doctor about it for the first time last thursday. My illness isn’t severe, i’m not at a dangerous weight, but i do need some help. Anyway…

My doctor found that my BMI was 19, the lowest ‘healthy’ weight. She said she wasn’t concerned about my size yet, but that she wanted to monitor me & i shouldn’t drop any weight.

However, my doctor doesn’t know that:
- I’ve missed 9 periods since i got down to my current weight (49kg, i’m 5ft 2.5).
I missed 2 periods once while i was this weight, but they started again once i got back up-to about 53kg. Basically, i stop menstruating once i reach my current weight.
My periods used to be regular, almost to the day.

- My body has stopped developing; i’m 15, my boobs haven’t grown since i was 10/11 when i first got them. I’ve also lost all the fat from my butt/hips which i’d started to get when i was around 12.

Would my doctor have been concerned about my weight if she had known those things?
I know i should have told her, but i was nervous. I plan to tell her when i see her again, in 2/3 months. Should i tell my nutritionist, who i’m due to see within the next month?

Also, for those who have been through treatment for anorexia, what was involved? Who did you see and what did they talk about?

Thanks very much really appreciated.

Your lack of a period could be because you aren’t eating enough, not necessarily because your weight is too low. However if you begin eating a normal amount and your period does not return, it may be that your body fat percentage is too low. A woman has to have a certain amount fat on her body to even get a period.

Yes! Tell your nutritionist, and she/he might be able to explain to you what to eat to resume your normal menstruation. However you will only get it back if you are committed to actually recovering from your eating disorder.
You really need to talk to your doctor as soon as possible, possibly get some tests done to make sure that everything is ok. Anorexia can cause severe effects, such as organ failure and electrolyte imbalances, even before you are underweight.
It would be an excellent idea to start seeing a therapist. It is possible to recover without going through therapy, but it is extremely difficult. Eating disorders are never just about food and weight, there is always an emotional problem in the background.

The fact that you have no fat around your hips and butt is because your weight is very low. It’s not because you aren’t developed or somehow managed to reverse your development, it’s just because you lost the weight that was there.

Good luck with your recovery, it is possible to get better.

ANOREXIA ?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

im not gonna be anorexic, that would be extremely stupid.
im doing a project on anorexia and i cant find good information on how to be anorexic, what do they eat? they dont just eat nothing, theyd die. and drink what do they drink?
like just water and gum? or whaaat… thankyoou for yur help!

Well I cant speak for everyone but back in the day when i went that route for a lil while I was hooked on eating an extremely small amount of Iceberg lettuce with water. Gum was a bit of an addiction because the sugar in it was a substitute for food… it kinda nullified the hunger pangs a bit. For me, ice aside, that was about it. Or little bits of fruit or cucumber. Pretty much anything water based.

What kind of anxiety medicine works for anxiety?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

What kind of anxiety medicine works for anxiety? I was diagnost with anxiety and tomorrow i go to my doctor to get medicine for it. I always have racing thoughts, I always worry, I am very irretable and I stay tired all of the time.

That’s the worst s h i t you can ever take. Anxiety is normal, everyone has it. It’s how you deal with it that matters. No medication is going to teach you how to deal with life, overcome fears, deal with worries, stress, etc. Even depression can be a factor with anxiety, and often it’s because of the way we think that ends up in a cycle of depression. How we think ends up in how we feel. It’s the habit of thought process that ends up in the negative emotions. How you learn to deal with your thinking, your outlook, your attitude (positive or negative), your level of faith, confidence, etc. I would far more recommend counseling than medication (even group therapy). Also, relaxation exercises, physical exercise, yoga, spirituality, relaxing music, taking time out, play time, etc. Anxiety medications especially the ones in the family of valium, Xanax, Librium, Attivan, etc are all from the same chemical structure. Once you get it on them, they actually cause a syndrome of anxiety that can increase 10 fold. You’ve heard of housewives that become addicted and end up having psychotic or mental breakdowns. It’s a nasty rebound affect, the medication that was suppose to help in the end is the disease. That kind of stuff is only good for VERY short term. Never stay on it for long term, look for other answers I’m not a big believer in alcohol. But honestly, you would be BETTER off taking a glass of wine 2-3 times a day than taking a valium 2-3 times a day to relax a little. I wouldn’t recommend the wine necessarily either, but it’s a better option than anxiety medication. By the way I was on it from age 16-21 and I ended up with an anxiety disorder and ended up spending 21 days in the hospital to get off the stuff and get my mind back. It took a long time before I ever felt normal again. My boss’s son is in his 30’s and he’s a MESS from Xanax, so is his wife. They wonder why they can’t overcome their anxiety disorder. The mother started it because of travel anxiety. She recommended her son for mild anxiety attacks he would have. Now their both 10 times worse off being on that crap. They don’t realize the medication is what’s crippling them. Millions are going through the same thing right now on the same stuff!

what should i do?

I have had Bulumia when i was 8 until i was 11 so roughly 3 years. I relapsed when i was 13 for a few weeks but got back on track. Approximately 4 weeks the relapse was for. 147.7 and 5′5, you certainly have no reason to be concerned about your weight. You may not be the "ideal weight", but you are not so overweight that you should make yourself sick over it. Look at beautiful women like in the public eye like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Queen Latifa (and many, MANY others)… they are not "the ideal weight", but are considered very sexy, beautiful women. It’s all in th way you carry yourself. First of all, you are not fat. And most importantly, it’s all about how you feel, so start embracing yourself and do what you need to, to make yourself feel good. It’s not quantity, it’s quality… so make youself feel good and pretty and the rest of the world will see you the same way.

How to tell my friends that I am going to be going to a residential treatment place for anorexia?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

They don’t even know that I am anorexic.
I am 12 years old, and in one week I have to go live in another state to get treatment for my anorexia.

I am thinking about texting them after my last day of school there. I really don’t want to have to say it to them in person. I know they wouldn’t understand, and it would just be awkward. What should the text say? Or should I write them a letter?

I’d write a letter – it will be harder for them to reply immediately afterwards so they won’t have the opportunity to blurt out their first response which may or may not be appropriate.

I would just stick to the basics of how long you expect you’ll be gone, whether or not you’ll be able to contact them while away or not, and let them know that even though you may not have been able to talk to them about anorexia before hand that you’ll be willing to answer questions (when you get back).

If you’re finding it too difficult, you could always ask your parents to talk to their parents after you’ve left.

Good luck with recovery!

What is healthier in the long run? Life long obesity, or near anorexia for a few weeks?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

The main question basically sums it up. Should I go on an extreme diet that is near anorexia, or stay fat? They treat anorexia as a major taboo, but seriously when do things get to the point where the wolf is better off chewing its arm off than to stay in a trap?
Lorena You’re a douche bag.

Can I just point out that these are 2 extremes and there’s no reason to do either. Why not do a healthy diet? Aim for 1500 calories a day and you WILL get there. Obviously it will be slower than a crash diet but that’s not a bad thing. It means you’re more likely to keep the weight off. It’s just a question of dedication and motivation. Keep at it and you can’t go wrong. X

What are the leading causes of depression and anxiety in women today?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Females suffer from anxiety and depression at twice the rate of men. In fact, mental disorders such as anxiety and depression are the leading cause of disability for women.

What are the leading causes of anxiety and depression in women? Please provide as credible sources as possible. Thankyou.
Great answers so far!

I think it’s hormonal and that women today live very stressful lives. Think about it. Women are expected to work full time, get married, raise families and keep house. They are tending to everyone else’s needs but their own. There is so much guilt and worrying doing all of these things
