How to tell my friends that I am going to be going to a residential treatment place for anorexia?

They don’t even know that I am anorexic.
I am 12 years old, and in one week I have to go live in another state to get treatment for my anorexia.

I am thinking about texting them after my last day of school there. I really don’t want to have to say it to them in person. I know they wouldn’t understand, and it would just be awkward. What should the text say? Or should I write them a letter?

I’d write a letter – it will be harder for them to reply immediately afterwards so they won’t have the opportunity to blurt out their first response which may or may not be appropriate.

I would just stick to the basics of how long you expect you’ll be gone, whether or not you’ll be able to contact them while away or not, and let them know that even though you may not have been able to talk to them about anorexia before hand that you’ll be willing to answer questions (when you get back).

If you’re finding it too difficult, you could always ask your parents to talk to their parents after you’ve left.

Good luck with recovery!

I’m glad you’re getting help for your anorexia. You shouldn’t feel pressured to tell everyone. Tell your closest friends first and see how that goes. Hopefully, they’ll be understanding and supportive. You can write a letter or email so that you can think out what you want to say first. Good luck!
