I am recovering from anorexia and I`m being told by doctors that I have to eat a lot because my metabolism is going through the roof right now. I know that when your body is starved your metabolism slows down but what I don`t understand is how it speeds up so quickly once you get back to eating. So is it true that I`m in a hypermetabolic state right now and that my metabolism is sky-rocketing, and why is it doing that?
I am basically in the same situation as you. When your body has been deprived from food for so long, your metabolism is very slow and it isn’t used to breaking down food. However, when your body is suddenly being fed again, it thinks that it isn’t going to last, so it’s important for it to use up every calorie, just in case it won’t be fed again for a long time. I heard that it does take awhile for your metabolism to get back on track, but it will eventually go back to normal. In the meantime, just keep up on the calories.
Why does recovoring from anorexia put you in a hypermetobolic state?
