Choosing the Right Doctors is Essential to Maximized Living

Choosing the right doctors is essential to maximized living, for without the right doctor, health problems may go undiagnosed or untreated. This self-neglect can lead to deteriorating physical and mental health.Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being all go together, and choosing the right doctor is crucial to supporting at least three of these. A physician who only treats physical symptoms, without questioning if there might be an underlying mental or emotional cause is not treating the whole patient. By the same token, one who immediately diagnoses a problem as a mental issue and prescribes an anti-depressant without looking into alternate possibilities is treating the symptoms without fully investing the cause. Both types do a disservice to the patient. While, for example, anti-depressants can do wonders to mitigate depressive symptoms, the client may gain additional long term benefit from a change in diet and exercise habit, or from simply getting out and socializing a little more. No one treatment will be right for every patient, especially in the case of mental health issues, and therefore it is crucial to choose the correct doctor.Recently, anorexia and other eating disorders have come to the fore in the news, and are therefore more easily diagnoses than they once were. However, from being under diagnosed or treated as strictly a behavior problem on the part of the sufferer:  “She’s just doing this for attention,” there are rare cases where something organic is causing a precipitous weight loss despite the best efforts of all involved, but where the patient has been assumed to have anorexia and undergone treatment which was ineffective because it was focused on the wrong problem. This is not to say that choosing the doctor best suited to an individual will immediately resolve all issues regarding problematic diagnoses, but the right physician will act in conjunction with the patient to determine the underlying cause if the initial conclusion does not seem to be solving the problem. The client will be treated as a person, not simply an interesting collection of symptoms.Being aware of the connectedness and differences between mental and physical ailments is increasing crucial in our current climate. Choosing a doctor who provides the right balance for any given medical consumer is important and a matter of personal choice. The consumer must carefully research and perhaps, “shop around” so to speak, to find one with the most comfortable fit. While there are many ways to research the best physician, one of the most common ways to choose the right doctor in order to maximize one’s life, one of the most common ways is through word-of-mouth. Picking a medical practitioner, at least initially because they have served a friend, relative or co-worker, is a very good way to start the search process, because not only does it give one a good idea of the physician’s personality, it may give the prospective client a foot in the door.
