This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides the best collection available anywhere of official Federal government information and documents on the subject of anorexia and eating disorders. This CD-ROM uses next-generation search technology that allows complete indexing and makes all files on the disc fully searchable. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material.
An eating disorder is an emotional and physical problem that is associated with an obsession with food, body weight, or body shape. Often, a person with an eating disorder diets, exercises, and/or eats excessively. These behaviors can have serious health consequences and can even be life threatening. The three most common types of eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Each type has its own characteristics and diagnosis.
This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Contents include clinical and medical Information, with information on risk groups, signs, symptoms, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical trials.
In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, as a bonus we have included an encyclopedic collection of general medical and health documents, with extensive material from the CDC, FDA, and NIH on hundreds of diseases. Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we’ve also provided our exclusive “Guide to Leading Medical Websites” with updated links to 73 of the best sites for medical information! By using weblinks on the CD-ROM, you can quickly check for the latest clinical updates directly from the government.
This CD-ROM has over 34,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!
Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents – they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals. (Information on this CD-ROM is not a substitute for professional medical advice; of course, readers are urged to consult with a professional health care provider for any suspected illness.)

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 10, 2008

Coming off two phenomenal YouTube clips that captured more than a million hits from her appearance at the Tavis Smiley “State of the Black Union” Conference, noted San Francisco Bay Area psychologist, author, speaker and educator Dr. Julia Hare is featured among Ebony magazine’s “2008 Ebony Power 150″ influentials in its May issue (on news stands now).

“Welcome to the new generation of power. OUR power. Black power,” the proud editors boast. The “Ebony Power 150″ spectacular replaces for the first time the magazine’s long-running annual selection of “The Most Influential Black Americans.”

Calling its feature “The New Black Power: The Next Generation of Influential Leaders Takes Its Place at the Top,” the Ebony editors recognized Dr. Hare’s prominence as an influential in the category of “Education,” singling out the National Executive Director of the Black Think Tank as one of only three persons given pictorial display and commentary out of ten individuals selected from such institutions as Harvard, Princeton, Wake Forest, Harvard Law School, Georgetown and Duke.

Dr. Hare’s achievements in education go all the way back to when she was a young elementary school teacher in the District of Columbia, and won the Junior Chamber of Commerce’s “Outstanding Young Educator Award” for all grade levels from kindergarten through high school for the entire city of the District of Columbia. Later she cofounded The Black Think Tank with her husband, Dr. Nathan Hare, who was the first person hired to coordinate a black studies program in the United States, and founding publisher of “The Black Scholar.”

Dr. Julia Hare has taught at Langston University, The District of Columbia Teacher’s College, the University of San Francisco, and the City College of San Francisco. She also has been a radio talk show host for the late Gene Autry’s Golden West Broadcasters (KSFO) and the ABC station (KGO) in San Francisco.

Now a highly sought after lecturer on the national scene, Dr. Julia Hare is author of the widely popular book, “How to Find and Keep a BMW (Black Man Working).” Her new book, “The Sexual and Political Anorexia of the Black Woman,” will be published in June. For further information about Dr. Hare, The Black Think Tank, and books by Drs. Julia and Nathan Hare are available at BlackThinkTank.com. View Dr. Julia Hare’s YouTube video.

SANTA FE, NM (PRWEB) December 31, 2004

Locally-based, internationally-operating organization, Anorexia Activism announced Wednesday they will be donating all proceeds from merchandise sales to benefit tsunami relief aid organizations. Funds will be donated to UNICEF.

In addition to attending to basic health and safety concerns for tsunami victims, UNICEF is currently working to provide psycho-social support for families traumatized by the disaster. As of press-time, UNICEF has already delivered bedding, clothing, medical supplies, as well as educational tools and recreational items for children in areas damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.

Often, internalized trauma manifests in varying degrees of psychiatric disorders in later years. Research has shown that addressing the emotional well-being of trauma survivors, even in small efforts such as working to restore a sense of normalcy, can be of great psychological benefit immediately as well as in years to come.

Founder and director of Anorexia Activism, Amy Guth, says the decision to give up months of funding was made in order to help “in one of the only ways we are able to give.” Anorexia Activism is an activist and educational outreach organization working to promote media literacy and eating disorders awareness.

To browse Anorexia Activism’s selection of t-shirts, stickers and other items, click on the links and merchandise section of their website. All proceeds from purchases made between now and March 1st, 2004 will benefit UNICEF.

Lydia Poole wants to be a good person—the kind of person who does everything right and deserves to be loved. To accomplish this, she eats only one cup of Cheerios per day and lets her weight drop below ninety pounds. When Lydia’s sister introduces Jesse, a new friend and filmmaker, Lydia agrees to be the subject of his documentary.

Jesse’s camera follows Lydia as she’s hospitalized for anorexia, as she walks the line between hoping for death and wanting life, as her weight continues to fall. With the camera running, Lydia shifts from the viewfinder’s object to the eye behind the camera. In doing so, she discovers how she wants to see her world.

What Others Are Saying About After the Strawberry

“Kathryn Pope’s After the Strawberry has everything I want in a novel: elegant, precise prose, unique, unsettling images, and a compelling, disquieting story. It is a work of real menace and real beauty. Not only that, but she somehow manages to combine the traditional pleasures of storytelling with the adventure of hypertext in ways that are lucid and visually startling. All this is testament to the endless range of her wild imagination and genuine talent. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.”

I spend a fairly large proportion of my time these days feeling embarrassed to be British. Trying to get home before Christmas to find that the biggest airport in the country was ‘closed’, leaving tens of thousands of people stranded probably didn’t help my mood. Watching the news over the Christmas period didn’t help much either. It seems like wherever I look our systems don’t work anymore.

(Figure 1: Failing (British) Systems In The News)

Or rather, they don’t when something out of the ordinary happens. Like a large amount of snow falls in a short space of time, or the ambient temperature stays below ambient for a long period of time. But, hold on a minute, didn’t we used to be able to cope with such things? 30 centimetres of snow might have closed Heathrow for a few hours in the past, but suddenly travelers are expected to endure five days of ‘flight cancelled’? People have found themselves with no water for a few hours following a freezing spell, but (as in Northern Ireland right now) surely not for over a week?

I believe that all of these instances are symptomatic not of a bit of extreme weather (Helsinki airport has been closed due to weather for approximately 3 hours in the last twenty years), but of something rather more sinister. My hypothesis? Lean.

Not Lean as it was originally conceived, however, but rather the crude bastardisation of the original thinking that has occurred in a rather large proportion of organizations.

Like a lot of things, some very smart initial thinking often gets diluted to the point where the smart thinking ceases to be smart any more. The big idea underpinning Lean is ‘waste is bad and so should be eliminated’. A statement that few would argue with. Indeed it is a statement that has passed through ‘common sense’ to become accepted dogma. It would take a very brave person inside any organisation these days to argue against adopting Lean principles.

But let’s have a look at what we actually mean when we say ‘waste’. Depending on which author you’re reading, there are a host of different ways and means of classifying the different types of waste. Figure 2 lists 15 types of waste as may be collated when looking across all of the different classification methods.

waste – process, business (employees, managers suppliers, etc), pure
waste of over-production
waste of waiting
waste of transporting
waste of inappropriate processing (using a hammer to crack a nut)
waste of unnecessary inventory
waste of unnecessary motions
waste of defects
waste of untapped human potential (empowerment)
waste of inappropriate systems (over-specified computers, machines, etc)
waste of energy and water
wasted materials
service and office wastes (excess meetings, food, photocopying, etc)
waste of customer time
waste of defecting customers

(Figure 2: Different Types Of ‘Waste’)

Now, an important question. Take a couple of minutes. Which one is the odd one out from Figure 2: Different Types Of ‘Waste’?

Found it?

Probably not.

Before revealing the answer, let’s take a moment to work out why the question is a difficult one: Like a lot of ‘improvement’ initiatives inside organizations, the initial big idea has to be communicated from the Board down the food chain so that everyone understands what is trying to be achieved. The moment we get below CEO level, however, and people are immediately forced to look through the list at those things they are able to do something about. Inevitably, someone working in the HR department, or on the shop-floor of a production line, or cleaning the desks at night is able to do something about a relatively small proportion of the available menu. Everyone below CEO in fact can only do something about a proportion of the total list.

And which is the one that almost no-one has any direct control over (probably including the CEO)?

Answer: the last one in the list -”waste of defecting customers”.

All the others are very tangible, measurable wastes. Wastes that people have the authority to do something about within their silo of the business. But ‘defecting customers’ has nothing to do with what happens inside either your silo or indeed inside the organization. A defecting customer is a waste that occurs outside the system. It is therefore a difficult one for anyone to do anything about…

…and as a consequence, it usually gets left off the list (in fact, in many organizations, it never makes it onto the list in the first place). And the moment that happens, the original philosophy has been corrupted and the organization is well on the way to the sort of failure shown in Figure 1.

It is very easy to strip out ‘waste’ when you’re only looking within your bit of the system. So, to take one of the Figure 1 examples, Northern Ireland Water chopped 500 jobs in 2007 in order to ‘strip out waste’. Part of which turned out to be a substantial chunk of their emergency response engineering team. An easy target when everything is working fine (‘look at those guys doing nothing in that office over there’). Not so great when something unexpected happens… and suddenly the desire to be lean has turned into anorexia. A ‘waste’ was stripped out of the system without realizing, until it was too late, that it wasn’t waste at all from the bigger picture perspective.

As the National Health Service, BP, Rolls-Royce, Heathrow airport and Northern Ireland Water have already found to their cost, and no doubt a thousand others still to experience their ‘bigger picture perspective’ problem will find in the coming months and years, Lean demands a holistic view. Lean within a silo leads to a lean silo and a dysfunctional – anorexic – system. Lean within a silo is folly.

So What?

You might rightly ask. Is this just a post-Christmas rant, or is there a point to this discussion? Hopefully, the latter.

And it is this. Everyone recognizes that when a system approaches maturity, it starts hitting some fundamental limits. The limits stay fixed, but the pressure to ‘do better’ (‘eliminate waste’) if anything only increases…

…and a contradiction emerges…

…which we know dictates that we either resolve it or accept that we are bound to create an inevitable failure.

It is expensive to run an airport like Heathrow. Especially following a recession which has seen a fall in passenger numbers and therefore revenues. The trade-off way of resolving this conflict is to not invest in snow-clearing equipment and pray for fine weather. The contradiction solving method says we have to change the system. Which in turn means identifying some resources that can help. Preferably free ones, that want to help because a win-win solution is produced.

On the fifth toe-curlingly embarrassing day of the BAA’s inability to get the second runway at Heathrow open, the company’s COO appeared on the national news to thank the Government for their offer to bring in the Army to help clear the 30cm of snow from the runways, but to say that the help was not needed. Fair enough that he didn’t want to (or couldn’t) invest in more snow-clearing equipment before the snow fell; but bordering on the criminal that he hadn’t been on the phone to the local Army base to request their help five minutes after the (correctly predicted by the forecasters) snow started falling and the impending disaster began, never mind five days later.

The Army would’ve won – public goodwill, the opportunity to train on a ‘real’ mission, etc – BAA would’ve won and sure as damnit the poor stranded passengers would’ve won. Only problem: it was a solution that required someone to step outside their cosy silo.

Be warned, these incidents aren’t a one off caused by some slightly worse than normal weather, they’re the first signs of a corporate anorexia pandemic. The only cure for which is to start solving contradictions and transcending a host of artificially created and usually mis-conceived silos.

A concise account of the insight into the life of a victim of anorexia and their supporting family. The book aims to provide some understanding on the entire heart ache and torment for the anorexic’s family. It also enlightens people to the twisted, yet frustrated turmoil of the thoughts and emotions of the anorexic’s muddled brain.

Looking back over those frustrating years it is hard to accept that something that most people find enjoyable, sociable as well as being essential for the survival of the human well-being could be so traumatic to an individual. The restrictions that an individual inflicts upon themselves, not only affects their own well-being but the interactions of social behaviour in almost all aspects of their life.

This can be associated with family voids for those families eating together at meal times, to family meal social events. It does not stop there, but has a knock on effect with all those individuals that surround you through every day life such as school, work and university. As the anorexic becomes more obsessed with their eating disorder, the quicker the rumours begin to spread about how the individual is not eating as much as normal. Those individuals dearest to the individual begin to observe the change in mood swings, the constant self distraction, vagueness and self isolation of the anorexic from the environment. The comments or murmurs about weight loss, which are all too true, the anorexic chooses to ignore.

I would hope that this account will provide some encouragement for all concerned, both the anorexic and all of the individuals associated with the anorexic. Hopefully, it will prove that with some determination, positive attitude and self belief from the individual anorexic, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I almost feel terribly embarrassed to share with others this explicit account, to the extent that I have thought on several occasions as to whether I should include all of the very explanatory text that I have done in this account of my journey through anorexia. However, I have included all of the graphic details on everything that I did during those terrible years, as I feel that only a true understanding of inside an anorexic’s head can be achieved in this way.

Tucson, Arizona (Vocus/PRWEB) February 25, 2011

As part of Sierra Tucson’s commitment to help individuals obtain the treatment they need, the world-class psychiatric hospital and residential treatment center has negotiated contracts with over a dozen insurance providers for the treatment of eating disorders.

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) reports that Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Recognizing the seriousness of eating disorders, Sierra Tucson’s staff has made extra effort to help people who suffer from Anorexia, Buitorial@!plimia, or Binge Eating Disorder/Compulsive Overeating. Contracts have been established with Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Behavioral Health, and ValueOptions, among other insurance companies, to assist patients in accessing the clinically advanced, often life-saving treatment for eating disorders at Sierra Tucson.

A recent news story from CBS Chicago investigated “Eating Disorders and Insurance.” The story conceded, “Eating disorders are an epidemic, with about 11 million people in this country suffering from one. So why are insurance companies increasingly delaying, denying or minimizing coverage for this potentially fatal disease?”

CBS 2 Investigator Dave Savini took a look at how Illinois cases are frequently handled and reported that experts “admit insurance companies are increasingly issuing denials or reducing coverage because of concerns about increasing mental health costs linked to health care reform.”

Cyd Force, CPUR, Sierra Tucson Utilization Review Coordinator, works with insurance companies on a daily basis to advocate for Sierra Tucson’s eating disorder patients. She states, “I provide initial information for pre-certification and negotiate every few days with concurrent updates on patients’ clinical progress.”

Although Sierra Tucson’s staff acknowledges that it has become a greater challenge to get authorization and some instances occur where the patient is denied outright, the staff members’ dedication is evidenced by successfully obtaining assistance for many patients. “We are frequently successful with partial approvals,” says Cyd Force. “Approval is based on medical necessity and is usually given for one week at a time. Patients sometimes receive authorization for an entire 45-day stay, and approval has occurred for up to 65 days.”

Specifically, during the Fourth Quarter 2010, Sierra Tucson performed insurance pre-certification and utilization review for 14 eating disorder patients, 1 of which is still in-house as of this week. Of the 14 insurance cases:

3 were denied (zero days authorized based on not meeting medical necessity)
6 cases were authorized in total
4 cases were partially authorized
1 case did not require pre-certification or review

“Our negotiation of contracts has contributed to many patients receiving help with the necessary treatment for eating disorders,” continues Force. “Some insurance companies follow very stringent criteria, and even within the same company, different states have varying requirements.” She gives credit to United Behavioral Health, ValueOptions, Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Minnesota Blue Cross Blue Shield as examples of companies that consistently work in a collaborative fashion to coordinate care for their clients.

ANOREXIA NERVOSA, commonly shortened to just anorexia, is a mental condition that affects mostly women, and is basically a phobia or intense fear of gaining weight. This being a case, I will refer to the subjects in the feminine form.

The anorexic sufferer is obsessed with food control, and although in most cases is painfully thin, she feels she is overweight and applies severe limits to her intake of food.

This preoccupation with food consumption is a major issue in the life of the Anorexic and is usually accompanied by extreme anger and anxiety. The passion over food regulation is thought to be a desperate effort to ease the tensions of stresses.

These are the observations that usually denote an anorexic person.

A persistent resistance to being a normal body weight for her height.
Possesses an extreme fear of putting on weight.
Has the illusion that she is very fat, although the opposite may be true.
She will miss 2 or more periods; if past puberty.
She is convinced that normal body weight is too fat.
Can Men Become Anorexic?

Males can become anorexic but statistics show that the condition affects mostly women, and reveal that 80 – 95% of anorexics are female.

In the past there were suggestions that women of African descent were immune to anorexia, which seems to substantiate the very rare cases among Negro races. No hard facts seem to be abundant regarding eating disorder, not only among African races, but also among Latin and Asian races, and their descendants. Maybe the pressures of Western social life are a contribution to phobias in general. Who knows for sure?

What is the Cause of Anorexia?

Anorexia doesn’t have any one known cause apart from being an eating disorder that is a known phobia or compulsion. The good news for any Anorexic is that is it now a recognized illness and it is treatable. But although the condition is complex, several likely causes have been suggested by the psychology experts:

Western culture: Where women are under pressure to stay young and sexy, and role models are constantly exposed by all forms of media. This can prompt a feeling of failure in less secure minded people.
Within the family: A sibling or mother or anyone else in the household who has anorexia can pass it along to anyone vulnerable to accept it. Parents who overdo their obsession with looking good will affect a child; perhaps a schoolgirl a little overweight. Nobody is too young to get anorexia.
A traumatic event like rape or even starting a new career or job can lead to anorexia.
Self Disapproval: Someone who doesn’t like herself and dislikes her looks, or feels left out or abandoned. Often it can be fear of failure to reach goals and perfection.
Finally: Basic Physio: Genes, brain transmitters and biological chemicals may cause anorexia. Those uncontrollable factors in our makeup that make us catch cold or suddenly develop a headache.
Personality Change

This batch of anorexic facts reveals a sad story. Anorexics never act like themselves, and tend to change personalities. They may seem obsessed with talking about meals and food, or have mood swings; not wanting to socialize. These are problems where a good psychiatrist will be the best form of medicine, and the Anorexic’s friends need to be patience as someone they know is trapped inside a destructive phobia unable to get out without help.

The Pro-Anas.

It is hard to believe that there is a section of the community who call themselves ‘Pro-Ana’ and firmly condone the instigation of Anorexia as a means to living a healthy life style. The Pro-Ana’s ideals are conditioned by research into the physical condition of the starving millions in the world as compared to the gluttonous habits of the average Westerner.
