The Whole Woman and Her Whole Wellness: Physical Health and Well-being

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

A woman is beautiful as she is! Welcome to the power of women, the power that makes them just as capable, as smart, as funny, and as compassionate as men. More than that, it empowers them to take up her distinctive position in society, at the same time being a daughter, a wife, a mother, homemaker, and all the other roles her considerable responsibilities call upon her seemingly infinite energy. Along with this emotional fluency, skill required to make a family survive and the language of power, the quintessential woman needs to be physically fit as well.

Very few physical disorders are unique to women, or are more prevalent or serious in women. Medical wellness consultants will inform you that the earliest to appear are precocious puberty, anorexia and bulimia. Reproductive health concerns are a major focus of women’s health. Cancer is the leading cause of death in middle-aged women. Smoking contributes to numerous causes of death and disability among women.

Lung Cancer: Cancer accounts for maximum deaths among women aged between 35 to 54 years. For years, breast cancer was the leading cancer killer among women, but now lung cancer takes the lead with more and more women taking to cigarette smoking. What makes this change frightening and dramatic is that lung cancer is a preventable disease, yet today it kills more women than breast cancer.

Breast Cancer: There is, however, good news from women health specialists regarding breast cancer treatment. Modification in surgical procedures, research indicating that estrogen receptors respond well to a drug called tamoxifen and experimenting with a new drug called RU-486, along with women taking a more active part in their health care are considerable contributions to the treatment of breast cancer.

Gallstones occur four times more frequently in women than men. Attributed to multiple pregnancies, obesity, and rapid weight loss, the real cause of this disorder is still unknown. Stones are formed in the gall bladder due to a saturation of cholesterol and bile salts that crystallize and collect over time. A number of experimental drugs are being used as an alternative to a surgical approach called cholecystectomy.

Menopause and Osteoporosis: Post-menopausal women often suffer a disorder called Osteoporosis. Lack of estrogen after menopause causes loss of bone mass, resulting in weak bones that are susceptible to easy injury in case of a fall or mishap. There are no symptoms, and that is why Osteoporosis is known as the “silent disease”. Certain steps can be taken to prevent osteoporosis from ever occurring. Women over the age of 50 have the greatest risk of developing osteoporosis and Caucasian and Asian women are more likely to develop this condition. Heredity and less body weight are an important risk factors. Exercise, calcium, vitamin D, and post-menopausal estrogen replacement play an important role in preventing this disorder.

Thyroid abnormalities are four to five times more common among women than among men. While, there is effective treatment, the cause again is unknown. Arthritis and diabetes are other disorders that are more common in women. Lupus erythematosus is a disease in which 90 percent of the victims are women.

Hence, there are quite a few disorders that are more frequent in women than in men or that differentially affect women. While considerable progress has been made to combat most of these, there remains much to be learned about others.

It is every woman’s prerogative to form clear questions about her physical health, find clear answers, gain a sense of empowerment through knowledge, and inevitably achieve peace of mind through total wellness. Here is information shared, openly and candidly, associated with women health and wellness. We women need to arm ourselves. We need this knowledge to manage our own care.

Taking Home Your Gold

If you are like my family I am sure that you have been watching at least some of the 2008 Summer Olympics. I love the Olympics because the athletes must stay focused and overcome all adversity. Their mind has to stay focused on the prize- The Gold Medal. If the athletes show up in Beijing and do not keep their mind focused on the Gold Medal, then they will have already lost the prestigious prize in their mind, therefore no gold will be hung around their necks. The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin words: “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, which means “Faster, Higher, Stronger”. These three words encourage the athlete to give his or her best during competition.

One of my favorite parts of watching the Olympics is hearing the stories of the athletes and what they have gone through each day, year after year to prepare themselves for this moment in time. Dara Torres became the oldest Olympic swimming medalist during these Olympics in Beijing. She is proof and inspiration that your body can be rock-hard at 41; a baby doesn’t have to slow you down or mean you cannot aspire to your dream; and when it comes to any goal, it’s all about how bad you want it! She was the first athlete to pose alongside models in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, but she is more famous for her comebacks. After she won four medals in three Olympic games, she retired from competitive swimming in 1992 because she thought (and probably the sports world too) that she was too old at the age of 25! In 1999 she resumed training, went to Sydney Games and took home 3 Bronze Medals and 2 Gold Medals! She is the first U.S. swimmer to compete at five Olympic Games and the oldest woman ever to make the U.S. Olympic swim team. She has become a testament of dedication, passion and willpower. You go girl! Dara is a mom, she has battled bulimia, been divorced twice, and recovered from five knee surgeries, however she is right there in Beijing with her eye on the prize once more! That is what I love about the Olympics!! Endurance, perseverance, dedication, and a never give up attitude!

That is what we have to do! We may not be training for an Olympic game, however most of us do overcome amazing odds and adversity to walk on in this thing we call life. No matter what we are facing or what our dream is- we can achieve it no matter the circumstances, no matter our age, no matter what! We have to set our eye on the prize!

All athletes must work on the mental part of their game just like they do the physical part. I often thought as I watched the US Gymnastic Team competing, as they would close their eyes while awaiting their turn. I bet they were seeing in their minds eye exactly what they wanted the outcome to be. You must see it first in your mind and believe it will happen, and then it will become a reality. This is the power of the subconscious mind. Jack Canfield states that one of the most important 45 minutes of your day happens just before you go to sleep. I too have taught this principle for years and it is very successful. According to Canfield, set aside time at the end of your day to do these four things:

1.) Acknowledge Your Success – give yourself credit for what you have accomplished in your day. Focus on what you did RIGHT!

2.) Review Your Goals – What did you get accomplished? What goals need to move forward to the next day? Where could you have been more effective?

3.) Focus on your successful future – focus on what you DO want, not what you don’t want. Keep a clear vision of your future.

4.) Make specific plans for what you want to accomplish the next day – WRITE IT DOWN!

During the night your subconscious mind replays and processes your late night input up to six times more often than anything else you experienced during the day. If you are falling asleep watching the late news, those are the images you will replay during your sleep! Instead read your goals, read some positive material, close your eyes and visualize your goals for the next day.

You may not be in Beijing but you are amazing, and you can and have, overcome adversity and you have taken the Gold!

Women’s Health Care

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

When the topic of women’s health care is raised, the first disease that comes to mind is probably breast cancer. But surprisingly, that’s not the number one health care issue confronting women today. In fact, heart disease kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. By knowing the most significant risks in women’s health care and what you can do to combat these health care issues, women of all ages can take a proactive approach to leading healthier lives.
The #1 Women’s Health Care Issue: Heart Disease More than 489,000 American women lose their lives each year as a result of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. In fact, more women than men die from heart disease each year. Until recently, little research focused on women and heart disease, but the good news is that’s no longer the case. From research into the effects of hormone replacement therapy on heart health to studies of how cholesterol-lowering medications work in women, there’s an unprecedented increase in the amount of information available to women working to live with and ward off heart disease.
Experts at the Mayo Clinic offer simple common sense advice to women (and men) in the fight against heart disease: don’t smoke, eat a diet low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, exercise at least 30 to 60 minutes a week, and maintain a healthy weight.
In addition, they encourage women to see their family doctor each year for a physical which includes blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Studies indicate that there is a 46% increase in stroke risk for women for each 7.5 mm HG increase in their diastolic blood pressure, so monitoring blood pressure and controlling hypertension are vital.
Women who suffer migraines, are pregnant, have atrial fibrillation and those with the auto-immune disease Lupus also appear to run a greater stroke risk. Diabetes is another women’s health care issue with a direct impact on heart health. The American Heart Association notes women with diabetes have a two to six times greater risk of heart disease and heart attack and are at a significantly greater risk of suffering a stroke. All of these risk factors make an annual visit with your doctor one of the best ways women can manage and improve the health of their hearts.
Cancer Concerns: The Second Deadliest Health Care Issue Women Face While breast cancer is often at the top of the list of health care issues for women, several other types of cancers also pose a significant threat to women’s health. In this country, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime according to current data which means that a little more than 2 million women are currently living with breast cancer in the U.S. But melanoma, a form of skin cancer, actually kills more young women than any other cancer according to statistics provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation. In fact, melanoma is the most common form of cancer in women between the ages of 25 and 29 and its incidence has tripled in women under 40 in the last thirty years.
Ovarian cancer is another women’s health care concern. Usually symptomless until it is widespread, this disease is the fourth most frequent cause of death for American women. The American Cancer Society estimates 26,000 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed each year. Unfortunately, there are few definitive screening tests that detect this disease, but experts advise a thorough annual gynecological exam and for women to be alert to pelvic pain and pressure, low back discomfort, mild nausea, and an increase in constipation or gas. A serum CA-125 blood test can detect certain forms of ovarian cancer, but the test is not accurate enough to be used as a routine screening tool.
The rate of women suffering from cervical cancer has dropped a great deal over the years, thanks in part to the increase in the number of women who get an annual Pap smear which can indicate the presence of abnormal cells on the cervix. It’s a strong argument for making sure you never skip your Pap smear. Women who have had Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs), herpes simplex virus, those with suppressed immune systems, and those who have had multiple sexual partners run a greater risk of cervical cancer. On the prevention front, a recent trial of a vaccine against cervical cancer was 100% effective in the short term at blocking the disease.
Psychological Well-being: A Growing Health Care Issue for Women In the field of women’s health care, psychological problems, which include eating disorders, depression, and anxiety disorders, affect millions of American women. From coping skills to medications to alternative and complementary medical approaches, there is a growing body of knowledge being brought to bear on this important health care issue.
More than 19 million people in the United States, the greatest percentage being women, live with anxiety disorders that disrupt their lives. The different types of disorders within this group include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and phobias. Treatment options include talk therapy and a wide range of medications that can quell the symptoms of the condition. Many women also combine alternative approaches to treatment such as acupuncture, meditation, and diet modification with traditional forms of treatment.
According to the American Psychological Association, women are almost twice as likely to suffer from major depression as men. In fact, some experts in the field have called depression the most significant mental health risk for women, especially those in their childbearing and rearing years. Studies have found that married women and mothers are especially vulnerable to depression. It’s important for a woman who feels she may be suffering from depression to be carefully evaluated by a physician because the source of the depressive symptoms could be birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, or thyroid disease. Treatment for depression, like most other psychological conditions, includes talk therapy and medications. Some women also find relief in alternative medicine with herbal supplements, meditation, and other complementary techniques.
Though many of the women who struggle with eating disorders are in their teens and twenties, these conditions also affect women at other stages in their lives. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating are the most well-known forms of eating disorders. Statistics show that one out of every one hundred girls between the ages of 10 and 20 is anorexic, 4% of college-aged women are bulimic, and 1% of women are binge eaters. The root causes of these diseases include stress at home and at school or work, depression and anxiety, major life changes like a divorce or death, and physical and sexual abuse. Breaking out of the cycle of eating disorders requires a combined approach to this health care issue including psychological treatment, nutrition counseling, and in some cases, hospitalization.
A Holistic Approach to Women’s Health Care As women become more proactive about their health, many seek a holistic approach to improving their well-being and fighting disease. But coordinating information among several health care providers, keeping on top of the latest breakthroughs in health, and finding the United States’ best doctors is a daunting task for any women.
Some are turning to private professional health care advocates, like those available at PinnacleCare, to help them achieve their goal of a whole-woman centered approach to health care issues. From compiling and electronically storing comprehensive medical records to researching treatment options and providing accelerated access to the United States’ top doctors, PinnacleCare’s health advocates make a holistic approach to health care possible.
“I passionately believe that what our PinnacleCare Members experience is the way healthcare ought to be delivered,” explains John Hutchins, PinnacleCare’s Managing Director. “The healthcare system has gotten so complex that most people are at a loss to find their way through it without professional guidance and objective counsel.”

Food cravings – information

A Craving You Can’t Seem to Control

You may overdose on potato chips or tortilla chips once in a while, but would you consider yourself to be a food addict?  The answer is important, because it could be the key to determining what course of action you need to take in order to lose weight.  A number of medical experts say that food addiction is just as serious as nicotine or cocaine addiction—and can potentially be just as deadly.

When you suffer from food addiction, you have an overwhelming desire for a particular food.  The desire is so strong, in fact, that if you are unable to consume that food, you suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and depression.   Food addicts crave the comfort that a particular food gives them.  They also may engage in binge eating.   Their cravings for food may be both physical and psychological.

It should be pointed out that there are different varieties of food addiction.  For instance, there is compulsive overeating, where an individual goes on eating binges that can last several days.   The addict may sometimes lose weight, but tends to gain it back again.   Symptoms include eating quickly, compulsively eating alone, and eating when there is no evidence of hunger.

Yet another form of addiction is bulimia, in which an individual overeats, then purges either by vomiting or by taking laxatives.   Signs of this condition include isolating oneself when eating, trying to consume huge portions of food rapidly, and being preoccupied with one’s weight.

Food addiction can also come in the form of anorexia, where an individual attempts to starve oneself in order to achieve an unrealistic weight.  Anorexics tend to be 15 percent below normal body weight and have a phobia about being fat.  They have difficulty eating with other people and appear to be obsessed with weight.  They may engage in ritualistic behavior involving food and may suffer from depression.

The good news is that food addiction can be successfully treated.  This treatment can come in a variety of forms.  A food addict may work with a psychotherapist to develop new ways to deal with food and his or her emotions.  The therapist might be able to identify the source of the individual’s fear or anger—the reason behind the individual’s addiction.   In the majority of cases, the psychologist will help the individual to develop a treatment plan which spells out expectations and goals, both for the short-term and the long-term.   In the most serious cases, an individual may have to undergo in-patient treatment at a psychological facility.   Treatment often involves helping the individual to return to healthy eating methods, dealing with the underlying emotional causes of addiction, and learning effective coping techniques.

Food addicts often follow the tenets of the same kind of 12-step program used by alcoholics.  This involves admitting their powerlessness over food, their belief that they could be restored to sanity, and an admission of their faults and failings.  In addition, food addicts often draw strength from support groups made up of people who have similar difficulties dealing with food.  Just knowing that there are other people who face the same challenges can be incredibly therapeutic.

It is unclear at this point whether food addiction is a genetically-based illness.  Certainly, however, there is evidence of eating patterns being passed down from one generation to the next.  In fact, many food addicts may only seek help after they have determined that their illness could adversely affect their children.

It is entirely possible that a food addiction can never be cured, that it can only be treated.  In other words, the recovery period for the addiction can last a lifetime.  However, one should never lose hope of beating a food addiction.  With patience and with time, individual addicts can learn the behavioral skills which will enable them to keep their weight under control.  Of course, there will be times when individuals will be tempted to indulge in sweets or excessive carbohydrates.  However, knowing the pain that they will undergo if they continue their harmful eating habits could be just the incentive they need to stay the course.

How a Depressed Woman Can Change Her Life and Regain Control

Friday, March 12th, 2010

According to statistics, rates of depression are twice as high for depressed women as they are for men. In addition, certain types of depression, like premenstrual syndrome or PMS, premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD, postpartum depression or baby blues, and perimenopausal depression, are specific to women. In addition, women are more vulnerable to seasonal affective disorder. A woman is also likely to manifest slightly different symptoms than her male counterpart.A depressed woman also goes through different experiences at different stages of her life. Pre-adolescent girls and boys are equally prone to experience depression. However, by their teens, girls become much more likely to go into depression than boys. The biological and hormonal upheaval of puberty contributes to this increase in depression rates, as do socially implanted self esteem and gender roles issues. Social stereotypes cause them to doubt their own problem-solving abilities, reinforce low self esteem, and insecurity problems. Due to social and familial imbalances, teenage girls are statistically more likely to suffer as a result of childhood sexual abuse, poverty, poor education, and so on, which adds to their higher rates for depressive disorder. As young women, depressed women might suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD. This is a severe form of the more common PMS which about 75 percent of childbearing age women have in some measure. As many as 10 percent of women, in the same age segment, may suffer from PMDD, which has symptoms like sadness, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, strong cravings for certain foods, attention and concentration problems, fatigue, breast tenderness, headaches, swelling, bloating, or joint pain. If these symptoms manifest 10 to 14 days before the period and are alleviated only when the period actually starts, PMDD is a possible diagnosis. After childbirth too, a woman may have sharp mood swings, going from elation to tears in an instant. A slight feeling of loss of control and depression, especially at the gargantuan task they face, is normal. They may have a hard time concentrating, lose appetite and sleep beginning from a couple of days after delivery. The syndrome may last several days, in the normal course of things. However, if a depressed woman suffers baby blues for more than 10 or 12 days after childbirth, it becomes something called postpartum depression. There is more chance of a depressed woman in the older age groups, than older men. However, the good news is that depression rates in women generally decline post menopause. Like men, older depressed women tend to have triggers such as death of a spouse or loved one, retirement, or chronic illness. Most older women tend to regain emotional balance, over time, although some don’t. Older depressed women might go undiagnosed, since adult women are less likely to discuss sadness or grief. Also, in a large number of cases, depression among older women gets dismissed as age related angst, or simply a desire to irritate family members. Anorexia and bulimia are two other depression related problems that affect mostly women. These eating disorders begin in teenage years, and can plague a woman all her life. A depressed woman suffers low self esteem, a belief that she is not worthy of love, and suicidal tendencies along with all the other standard symptoms of depressive disorder. So what is she to do about it? Well, the first step is to realize that there is a problem, and the second is to seek help. Although many women take anti-depressants, all drugs have side effects that can even make your symptoms worse. This is why many people, particularly women who want to regain their health, vitality and positive outlook on life are turning to natural remedies. Natural supplements work by increasing the production of feel-good neurotransmitters which can lift a depressed woman out of her funk and help her start feeling better about her life. From homeopathy to antidepressants, from therapy to holistic natural remedies, there are many treatment options available. There should not be any doubt in your mind that you deserve to change your life and regain control over it.

Free Weight Loss Tips: 7 Really Bad Ways to Lose Weight

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Some people are on a never-ending quest to find quick ways to lose weight. Many people jump from one method to another trying to find that magic bullet cure to dropping pounds the easiest and fastest way possible. The things they are willing to put their bodies through, while trying to achieve this goal, goes from mildly amusing to down right scary.

Maybe you’ve tried some of these methods yourself. Heaven knows there’s no shortage of advertisements, websites and product manufacturers encouraging you to try the latest, greatest fat loss miracle. Companies, and some individuals, make millions of dollars promoting these schemes to the unwary. The truth is, it would be a miracle if anyone was able to lose weight and keep it off permanently without either, wasting their money, or risking their health with these products and schemes.

Here’s a list of the worst ways you can choose to lose weight.

Starvation – This seems like one of the simplest ways to get weight to come off. I mean, not eating means you’re not ingesting any calories or fat, right? True. It also means that you’re literally starving your body of much needed nutrients it needs in order to function properly.

Most people who try to go the starvation route quickly find out that it’s hard to maintain for more than a few days. Not eating enough can lead to mental fogginess, feeling cranky and moody, and loss of energy. Who can get everything they need to do in the day done when they feel like this?

Plus, the worst part is that by denying your body the calories it needs, it will actually slow down your metabolism. You know what that means, right? Your body will not be able to burn fat efficiently. Instead, it will hold onto every single calorie you put into your body. Know why?

Because you’re starving it!

Our bodies are smarter than we think. They’re like machines. When your body gets less fuel than it’s used to, it knows enough to slow everything down and reserve its resources. When you finally

do get hungry and pig out, those calories will go straight to fat storage. Guess what? You may actually cause yourself to gain more weight by starving yourself.

Fad Diets – There’s an endless array of fad diets that instruct you to eat all kinds of things. Usually you have to eat the same food items, again and again, anywhere from 7

days to a whole month. For those who do manage to make it through a fad diet, their joy of dropping some water weight will be short lived.

Again, you can’t really lose enough weight and keep it off permanently by drinking lemonade, eating cabbage soup, diet cookies, ice cream, chocolate, popcorn, etc. While most fad diets do include healthy foods, they are way too strict and mundane to stick with for very long. Soon, you’ll

be craving your old comfort food favorites again. That is, until the next fad diet comes along.

Throwing Up – Okay, for most people, this is an uncomfortable idea and they won’t even try it. For others, it’s very attractive. They reason that you can eat anything you like, in any kinds of quantities, because it’s only temporary. Once you’ve pigged out, you go to the bathroom, stick your finger down your throat and up comes everything.

This temporary food enjoyment, followed by throwing up, can lead to serious health problems. Bulimia is a huge risk factor when you choose this road to weight loss. As we have seen too many times, people who use this method can develop serious issues with food and body image. This ultimately leads to life threatening consequences. Hey, you wanna lose weight, not end up a skinny basket case. Just being honest.

Pill Popping – Taking diet pills is one of the most popular ways people choose to lose weight. It’s also one of the most futile methods. If taking diet pills really worked well for all those who take them, then why do we see increasing numbers of obese people?

Diet pills have been around for decades, so you’d think that they would have a reputation for being so effective that most people would be slim and trim. Yet, here we are – fatter than ever.

Many people, who struggle with their weight, just don’t want to face the idea that it may take some actual work to drop those pounds. Instead, they desperately look for quick fixes, and there’s no quicker fix than popping a diet pill. Oh, and the promises the manufacturers make, are so over the top that it’s not any wonder they’re stuffing their pockets with cash. I mean, who wouldn’t want to drop all of their belly fat in 30 days flat – without lifting a finger or changing their eating habits?

Some diet pills are harmless herbal remedies that don’t really do much of anything. While others contain ingredients that have a detrimental effect on the body. There have been some sad news stories about people who’ve sustained permanent liver and kidney damage from taking a weight loss supplement. Others, unfortunately, have lost their life.

If you’re someone who is prone to taking diet pills, you need to stop and re-evaluate how effective they really are in helping you to lose weight. And, if they are that effective, why do you feel the need to keep taking them? Did you actually gain all that weight back?

Hmmm.

HCG Injections – Some people have resorted to taking hormone injections to lose weight. While our bodies naturally contain hormones, introducing any type of hormonal drugs into your body is really risky. While HCG is often used to help infertile women get pregnant, it is considered a controversial method in weight loss.

When you’re dealing with hormones, there’s gonna be side effects. Here are some of the documented side effects from taking HCG for long periods.

Abnormal breast enlargement (men), multiple birth pregnancies (women), tiredness, nausea, mood changes, acne, excessive fluid retention, sore throat, hair loss, prostate hypertrophy (men), unknown side effects from using counterfeit HCG.

Laxatives – The purpose of laxatives is to help loosen up the bowels if you’re constipated. That’s it. There is no evidence that taking laxatives to lose weight does anything positive to help the body shed fat. The thing is, as soon as you’ve ingested the food, your body goes into action to absorb calories. Taking a laxative after eating is already too late to prevent calories from going where they wish to go.

Those who have gone down this road often regret it, because laxatives can make you feel and look really ill. You can even become addicted to laxatives and end up being hospitalized. The damage you can cause your organs will not be worth all the pain and trouble.

Gimmicks – There are all types of silly products out there that claim they can help you melt away the fat in just minutes per day. Wrap yourself in a sweat suit or place a gyrating, electric belt around your waist. These are gimmicks that will just waste your time and money.

If you’re really serious about your health, there are smart ways to lose weight that don’t involve putting your body, and long-term well being, at risk. Losing weight takes real commitment, and yes – time. Many people who try things on the bad list just don’t want to hear this. They want to take shortcuts.

Well, again, if these shortcuts really worked, there wouldn’t be so many of these same people constantly trying to lose weight.

Cut 10 Strokes Off Your Golf Handicap With Two Fingers

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

If you’ve played golf a while you’ve heard practice makes perfect.
Here’s the bad news.
It doesn’t.
Keep reading for the good news.
Have you ever had a day on the course where everything goes just right? Tee shots are straight and far. Putts were true and short. The sand wedge was left in the bag. No hooks or slices.
And, if Tiger was in your foursome, you would have beaten him? Almost.
Then, the next time you played, you couldn’t do anything right? Hooks. Slices. Traps. Short putts that got longer. Topped tees shots.
What was the difference in the two rounds?
You know how to play golf. Any golfer that’s been playing for a couple of years knows the fundamentals of golf. You know where to put your feel, how to swing the club, how to putt, and what club to use.
What’s the big difference in the two rounds?
The answer is simple. And, now, believe it or not, the solution is easy.
On the good day you were hitting from “The Zone”. The one you try to get into on every shot. On the good day you managed to get into it on some shots. If it was a great day, you got into it on most shots. On the bad day the only zone you could find was the twilight zone.
But there’s another zone perhaps just as important in golf. The “Comfort Zone”. And, you’re about to learn how you can lower your’s.
What do you normally shoot? Eighty? Ninety? Hundred? Whatever it is, that’s your comfort zone.
All you have to do to lower your handicap is to change your comfort zone.
The problem with the comfort zone is that it has nothing to do with how well you know the fundamentals or techniques of golf. If you’ve been playing a while you know them. And, I’m assuming you do.
Instead, it has everything to do with how good a golfer you think you are.
If you “think” you’re 20 handicapper that’s what you are. If you think 10 that’s your handicap. Think 5…be 5.
Do you believe Tiger thinks he’s a five handicapper? Not on your life.
He thinks he’s a minus five so he’s the world’s greatest golfer. Maybe of all time.
So how good of a golfer do you think you are? More important, how do you change your thinking?
Ron Johnson, of Seattle, Washington, thought he was a 90 golfer. Until he changed his thinking and started shooting rounds in the mid 70s.
I’ll let Ron explain
“My statements began something like…”even though putting is extremely frustrating, I still completely accept myself.” I would practice on the putting green with 10-twenty foot putts, 10-ten foot putts and 10-five foot putts. Each time, I would go through the nine-step process with the same statement…”Even though these putts are nerve-racking, I still completely accept myself.” I found that I began to feel much more confident over the putts and some actually went in the cup. Three-putts to get the ball in the hole began to disappear and, within three months, my average scores went from 95-100 down to 85-90. I’ve had many rounds in the 70′s during the past year and I am now setting a goal of shooting below 70. The process works equally well with each shot in the game, not just the putter. In fact, I now use the process before beginning the round with the following statements: “Even though I am filled with apprehension on this round, I completely and totally accept myself.”
Statements? Completely accept myself? What is this new age stuff?
Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. You’ve probably read about it in the golfing magazines at the club house.
Ron was so impressed with what EFT did for his golf game he started coaching golf using EFT.
One of his students dropped his “average putts per round” from 37 to 29. Another golfer knocked an average of 5 to 6 strokes per round off of her score.
How did they do that? They changed their “Comfort Zone using EFT.
What is this EFT you’ve been reading about in the golfing magazine and online?
Gary Craig, a Stanford trained engineer, who developed Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, explains.
As he states on his world wide headquarters web site, “EFT is based on a new discovery that has provided thousands with relief from pain, diseases and emotional issues. Simply stated, it is an emotional version of acupuncture except needles aren’t necessary. Instead, you stimulate well established energy meridian points on your body by tapping on them with your fingertips. The process is easy to memorize and is portable so you can do it anywhere. It launches off the EFT Discovery Statement which says…
“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”
He goes on to say:
“All of the discoveries of modern physics, from Einstein on, support the ancient theory that a universal energy flows through everything in nature,” says Gary Craig, a Stanford-trained engineer. “This energy, called Qi or Chi, flows through the body along paths called meridians. Anything that stimulates points along these meridians helps the energy flow freely. Acupuncture uses needles, acupressure uses massage, and EFT uses fingertip tapping. By combining the tapping with focused thought, you can release energy blocks that interfere with a good night’s sleep. In countless clinical cases, EFT has helped people fall asleep and stay asleep, even in times of stress and adversity.
What can EFT be used for? For one thing, lowering your golf handicap.
And, almost everything. Here is a sample of disorders EFT is treating successfully: Pain Management, Addictions, Weight loss, Allergies, Children’s Issues, Animals, Vision, Headaches, Panic/Anxiety, Asthma, Trauma, PTSD, Abuse, Depression, Dyslexia, Carpal Tunnel, Anger, ADD-ADHD, Fears/phobias, Eating disorders, OCD, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Neuropathy, Fear of Flying, Claustrophobia, Agoraphobia, Anorexia/Bulimia, Sports and other Performance.
Doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and practitioners world wide are using it in their practices to help millions of patients and clients.
Can anyone learn it? Yes. In just a couple of hours you can learn enough about EFT to shoot the lowest game of golf you’re ever shot. But remember, it’s tougher going from a 20 handicap to a 10 than it is from a 10 to a 2.
You can learn more about EFT by checking the author’s bio and his recommended reports and reading material.

Preventing Eating Disorders

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Many articles have been written about eating disorders in news and media. Eating disorders are fast becoming a common issue with the young nowadays. Many of our young are not shielded by the influence of the media. Eating disorders can cause death. Thus, it is important to find out ways on how to prevent eating disorders.
The media has a major impact on the development of eating disorders. It sets unrealistic expectations on what it considers a beautiful body image to be. With the constant bombardment of ads, the mental development of you or your child gets distorted. Some families do not realize this danger and use the television as a babysitter and as couch potato. This is not wise as children can be quite impressionable. Hence, you can do more to prevent eating disorders from an early age.
The media often prefers to use thin models. However, it is found that the body weight of an average female model used is about 25% less than her ideal weight. Many models strive to achieve a thin look in order to get modeling jobs. They would go for plastic surgery or become anorexic themselves. Even if they are not thin enough, photos of models hat appear on print media such as magazines are usually airbrushed to correct any perceived flaws. In this manner, a beauty standard is set that in reality may be quite unattainable.
An average person is exposed to images at least 400 to 600 times per day. The images come from advertisements from the media. One out of eleven of these advertisements is actually for a beauty product. Hence, one way to prevent eating disorders is to cut down your exposure to these ads.
Your child may be subjected to peer pressure while in school. He or she may be teased about his or her appearance. If your child has a low self esteem, he or she may feel compelled to starve or through developing bulimia.
Statistics indicate that one out of seven college-aged females has a problem with bulimia, and one out of a hundred has a problem with anorexia. Eating disorder sufferers need psychotherapy as the causes are often deeply rooted on a psychological level. If nothing is done to help them, their eating disorders can escalate out of control. The sad truth is that one out of every ten people with an eating disorder eventually dies due to the damage caused to the body.
Preventing eating disorder is clearly an issue that everyone can do more for. The media needs to play a more responsible role with the body images that it portrays as beautiful. In the meantime, as a responsible person, you should not lay all the blame on the media either. You will need to take proactive measures to prevent our future generations from hurting their bodies through eating disorders.
