Eating disorders occur most often in young adolescents and teens; however, young children can develop eating disorders as well. Healthcare professionals are seeing a disturbing trend of children as young as age 5 developing eating disorders. While these eating disturbances often seem similar to the anorexia nervosa and bulimia, most commonly found in young teen girls, those occurring at a very young age often have other causes.

Food Refusal

With this disorder, children use food refusal as a means of manipulation. The behavior is often erratic and inconsistent. While this tactic is certainly frustrating for parents, it is sometimes associated with a recent source of stress or sadness and is not usually thought of as a threat to health.

Restrictive Eating

With restrictive eating, very young children eat a variety of foods, but clearly restrict portions. The underlying causes of this disorder remain unclear and although children exhibiting restrictive eating habits may have low weight or growth for their age, they generally eat a balanced diet, albeit portion restricted, causing medical staff to consider them healthy in most cases. As with most eating disturbances in very young children, restrictive eating seems to have no basis in a preoccupation with body image and weight.

Selective Eating

Selective eating disorder syndrome can begin as early as infancy and can mimic the common picky eating habits of many infants and toddlers. Children exhibiting picky eating behavior usually overcome their aversion to other foods relatively quickly before any nutritional threat is imminent. Those with selective eating disorder only eat foods from very narrow categories, often those high in simple carbohydrates.

Recognizing the symptoms of selective eating and taking steps to mitigate negative nutritional and psychological consequences can stop the child from developing a full-blown disorder that threatens health and well-being. Children with true selective eating disorder have an aversion to certain food textures and smells. They associate the texture, odor, or both with a traumatic incident, which they now associate with food. When coaxed to try the food group associated with the event, they often gag, cough, or choke. This disorder is often associated with an underlying psychological condition involving anxiety or autism.

Food Avoidance Emotional Disorder

Children can exhibit symptoms of food avoidance emotional disorder (FAED) very early in life. With this disorder, children can be as thin or thinner than those with untreated anorexia nervosa. The difference being that these children often feel shame at their thin bodies and know that their eating habits are irrational. Symptoms are closely related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many times, children with this disorder do not know exactly why they cannot overcome their eating issues, but desperately want to eat like their peers. They are often plagued with intense worry, sadness, and anxiety. Untreated, atypical eating disorders, such as FAED, can result in profound health and social issues for the child.

Causes of Eating Disorders in Very Young Children

Eating disorders in very young children can often mirror those of adolescents and teens with anorexia nervosa or bulimia, but generally manifest themselves much differently in the mind of the child patient. Anorexics and bulimics usually have profound body image and self-esteem issues because of their emotional stresses. Very young children with eating disorders do not have body image concerns. They exhibit no fear of becoming overweight. These children often have a first or second degree relative with an eating disorder, which indicates a genetic factor in the disease. Many have anxiety disorders and fear of separation from their primary parent (usually their mother). Other contributing factors include perfectionism, inability to effectively cope with daily stresses, and depression marked by tearfulness.

Treatments

Eating disorders in pre-pubescent children are new to prominence in the medical community. Consequently, specific treatments have not been established, but possible treatment options can be administered by a pediatric physician or psychiatrist. Concerned parents can stay informed and involved by keeping regular appointments with their child’s pediatrician. Those who strongly suspect the onset of an eating disorder in their prepubescent child should bring the child in for evaluation by a pediatric psychiatrist. The psychiatric physician may prescribe medication to attenuate the underlying anxiety or obsessive-compulsive condition thought to cause the child difficulty. Both individual and family therapy may benefit the family unit and the child specifically.

The disorders in your eating habits are very much connected with your psychology. Eating disorders are abnormal eating habits that can threaten your health or even your life. Almost everyone is worried about his or her weight occasionally. People with eating disorders take such concerns to extremes.

The Essence of an Eating Disorder

An eating disorder is defined as “a complex compulsion to eat, or not eat, in a way which disturbs physical and mental health.” Many people with eating disorders have no idea that they are suffering from a serious condition, and instead feel that are just acting in accordance with what feels right at the time.

Eating Disorder Causes:

An Eating disorder is the result of irregular and improper diet intake, stress filled lifestyle and the over ambition to reach size zero. Emotional bearing is also one of the reasons. It is a common disorder experienced by a sizable percentage of the population. Weight gain due to junk food habit because of less home cooking and the associated fear of being over weight are the root cause of eating disorder. More than two million people in USA are suffering from this.

Eating disorder which includes anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating are some of the serious forms of mental illness. Living a life with this illness imparts a feeling of insecurity, shame, anxiety. Mostly, the individual is left to struggle alone because of the complicated combination of physical and mental symptoms, but with proper medication, this illness can be cured. People with eating disorder feel that they are overweight and continue eating less and become malnourished.

Eating disorders are characterized by an abnormal obsession with food and weight. Eating disorders are much more noticed in women than in men. Environmental factors have a large influence on developing eating disorders but more research is being performed on hormonal imbalances, brain lesions and their effects on eating disorders. Many types of eating disorder such as , anorexia nervosa , starvation diet ,binge eating disorder , bulimia nervosa , diabulimia and night eating syndrome.

Types of Eating Disorders:

Compulsive overeating – Overeating or addiction of over eating is called compulsive overeating. People suffering from their abnormal eating, feels uncomfortable in society. Compulsive Overeater is at risk for a heart attack, high blood-pressure and cholesterol, kidney disease and/or failure, arthritis and bone deterioration, and stroke.

Binge Eating Disorder – Eating much more food during a binge episode than during a normal meal or snack. Frequent dieting without weight loss.Hoarding food.Hiding empty food containers.Feeling depressed, disgusted or upset over the amount eaten.

Diabulimia – It is a condition that is currently under recognized, but which deserves more attention. If there is little awareness, more deaths can occur. So what is diabulimia? If you look at the term “diabulimia” closely, you will find that it is a combination of the terms “diabetes” and “bulimia”.

Night Eating Syndrome – Night Eating Syndrome is a relatively new disorder. A person with night eating syndrome will often eat large quantities of food after their last meal of the day. Usually just before bed and during the middle of the night. They in turn will skip breakfast and not start eating until the middle of the day. Those with night eating syndrome will not just indulge in the occasional midnight snack, they will typically consume high calorie, low nutritious foods often through the night.

Bulimia :- Bulimia nervosa, known as bulimia, is an eating disorder and psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by feelings of guilt, depression, and self-condemnation and intentional purging to compensate for the excessive eating, usually to prevent weight gain. Purging can take the form of vomiting, fasting, inappropriate use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics or other medication, or excessive physical exercise.

Dana Point, CA (PRWEB) May 5, 2005

The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County (EDFOC), a newly launched non-profit organization, has started offering free services to Orange County residents who recognize the need for prevention and early detection of eating disorders in the Orange County, California area.

The newly launched non-profit provides free presentations to local schools, educators, parents, and athletic organizations, particularly gymnastics, that focus on relating accurate eating disorder information to our community. The Foundation’s goal is to bring attention to the prevention of eating disorders through educating young kids, teachers and parents starting in elementary school. The Foundation has developed a much needed curriculum that will become a part of education at every level. The Foundation also provides free public speakers for community and private events. In addition, EDFOC provides free and confidential eating disorder assessments, workshops and support groups for both adolescents and their families.

According to Nicole Bourquin, Founder and Executive Director, “We have to start providing real education about eating disorders to our kids starting in elementary school. What we’re seeing is that it’s too late for prevention efforts in high school or middle school; the seeds of an eating disorder are sown much earlier as shown in recent research.”

Bourquin comments on the lack of attention we give to eating disorder awareness,” “Our biggest challenge here in Orange County is trying to convince parents and educators in our community that we have a serious problem and it’s only getting worse.”

Bourquin further stated, “It’s frustrating to have to constantly convince parents and educators that the problem of eating disorders in young people is real and can cause havoc in both the child and the child’s family. The mission of the Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County is to bring this serious issue into the spotlight.”

About Nicole Bourquin

Nicole Bourquin is a local therapist in South Orange County. She has a Master’s degree in Counseling, with a focus in health promotion, numerous continuation classes in eating disorder education and treatment, teen and adolescent studies, child abuse, eating disorders in the gymnastics, dancing and modeling fields, domestic violence, substance abuse, and trauma response. She is presently finishing the required hours needed to sit for the State of California’s Board of Behavioral Sciences’ MFT license. Nicole provides counseling through Insight Counseling, a non-profit counseling center located in Lake Forest, CA. She specializes in working with adolescents and their families.

Jacksonville, FL (PRWEB) August 14, 2007

Alcohol detox and drug rehabilitation referral database, recoveryconnection.org, now offers assistance for patients suffering from eating disorders, including: anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating, and more. This referral database is free and allows patients to search for local eating disorders treatment centers throughout the United States anonymously.

Previously only catering to those seeking treatment for drug addiction or alcohol detox, the referral database has been upgraded to include the latest information for those seeking treatment for anorexia, bulimia, compulsive/binge eating, and other eating-related disorders.

An eating disorder is a serious psychiatric condition and it is recommended that eating disorders be treated as such. If left untreated, anorexia, bulimia, binge eating or other disorders can lead to the deterioration of one’s life and even death.

Eating disorders can not be defined by how much someone weighs or what they eat, the quality of their thinking as it has to do with food and weight. Generally, they fall into three categories: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge or compulsive eating. Despite the differences between these three disorders, there are certain things that people with disorders tend to focus on food, weight, and body image.

Desiring a specific weight isn’t an unhealthy goal, but obsessing over an unrealistic weight for your body type can be. Weight issues, such as focusing too hard on trying to lose or gain the exact amount can be a warning sign of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or compulsive eating. Parents should be aware of their children’s eating habits, and watch for any symptoms of anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating, especially when their children start getting concerned with their own body image, which typically begins at early adolescence. Eating disorders in children can be very dangerous and without proper treatment it can grow into a life-long issue, eventually leading to malnutrition, obesity, and it can also result in death.

Having a distorted body image can lead to weight issues, substance abuse, such as the abuse of diet pills, or other disorders. Men don’t typically think they can be affected by eating disorders, but whether you’re trying to fit into that size 0 or you’re trying to bulk up, it is important to identify your body type and set realistic goals accordingly. Eating disorders in men are becoming increasingly common.

Regardless of the nature of the disorder, if you or a loved one is symptomatic, it is recommended to seek professional treatment as soon as possible. Finding a safe, reliable, comfortable center with a quality eating disorder treatment program can be difficult, so a leading drug rehabilitation referral database has begun including eating disorder referrals to their system. Quality eating disorder recovery programs generally consist of a support group, like an eating disorders anonymous program,.

For those who are insecure or unsure about their disorder and are simply looking for more information, the recoveryconnection.org database has informative links and allows users to contact experienced medical professionals who deal with patients these eating disorders frequently.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 15, 2006

In her new book, Pieces of a Puzzle: The Link between Eating Disorders and ADD, Dr. Carolyn Dukarm focuses on the overlap between eating disorders and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and points out how diagnosing and treating both disorders can provide the missing pieces of the puzzle that hold the key to recovery.

People suffer daily from the symptoms of eating disorders. For some, however, eating is not the only area of their life that is out-of-control. Â?Every day I would see women that did not meet the criteria for either anorexia or bulimia, but clearly had disturbed eating habits, with typically no regularly planned meals or snacks, and an inability to follow dietary plans for any useful length of time,Â? states Dr. Carolyn Dukarm, an eating disorders specialist in Buffalo, New York. As these patients were more carefully evaluated in her Center for Eating Disorders, it became clear that the incidence of undiagnosed attention deficit disorder was very high.

The ADD/disordered eating connection is not difficult to understand. Healthy dietary regulation requires organization and planning Â? two areas of functioning that are typically difficult for those with ADHD. Good eating habits also require self-awareness Â? awareness of when one is hungry, awareness of when one is full. Many individuals with ADHD report that they skip meals because they were busy and distracted; these same individuals often report that later their hunger becomes so intense that they swing in the opposite direction, overeating well beyond the point of reasonable intake because they donÂ?t know when to stop until they feel Â?stuffed.Â? And individuals eat for many reasons besides hunger Â? including boredom, self-stimulation, anger, sadness, reward, simple food availability, and stress relief. In addition, weakness in consistent self-regulation, a well-documented difficulty for those with ADHD, often leads to patterns of chronic over-eating.

Pieces of a Puzzle is divided into six sections, covering the spectrum from diagnosis to treatment of both eating disorders and ADD. Each section contains Â?guidelinesÂ? or specific action steps that the reader can take. Participation is encouraged through directed questions and exercises.

Sections include information on:

Â? Diagnoses of eating disorders and Attention Deficit Disorder

Â? Finding the motivation to recover

Â? Nutrition as an important part of the treatment

Â? Medication and supplements

Â? Restructuring your life to better deal with both issues

Â? Guidelines for Health Care Professionals
