Dentist Now Checking for Oral HPV

Dentist Now Checking for Oral HPV

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) March 16, 2010

These days a trip to the dentist includes more than a check of your teeth and gums. It also includes a peak into your sexual history.

At one Seattle dental office a health and wellness examination now comes complete with a check for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). According to dentist, Dr. Brian McKay and Registered Dental Hygienist, Cris Duval, HPV is the fastest growing oral cancer-causing agent.

“Changing times means changes in morals and oral sex means the HPV virus is showing up more and more in both males and females,” says McKay. “Males often times display no symptoms, acting like a carrier of the virus and as we all learned in high school biology, a virus only needs the tiniest of entry points to spread.”

Duval and McKay screen every patient they see in their practice. “We’re on the front lines of this epidemic,” says Duval. “When a new patient comes in, we use the Velscope – the world’s first non-invasive oral cancer screening system, along with a comprehensive soft tissue exam,” according to Duval. “We also let our patients know that they or their partner could be at risk for developing HPV related oral cancer, if they have had 5 or more conventional or oral sex partners.”

In addition, many are choosing a new advanced healthcare screening technology test offered by McKay and Duval called OraRisk. This test provides them the ability to establish risk for HPV-related cancers of the oral, head and neck regions and helps to determine necessary immune support, accelerated monitoring conditions and possible referral. “Early detection is the key – before symptoms appear is the best time to discover if something is amiss,” says McKay.

Duval and McKay lecture on this subject to other dental professionals and most are unaware that a person dies of oral cancer every hour of every day. They also teach how to use the Velscope and were the first dental office in America to employ the technology.

According to Dr. McKay, people thought oral cancer would go away with the decline in smoking and tobacco use however that is not the case. “There are now more deaths from oral cancer than cervical cancer,” McKay states. Quoting the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, McKay points out that there are more then 400,000 new cases reported worldwide yearly. Combined with throat cancer, the numbers for oral cancer in America are in excess of 41,000 with 12,500 deaths each year.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and Duval and McKay are conducting screenings all month. “We can’t stand by and watch this get any more out of hand. It has to stop and we are here to see that happen,” states McKay. “If we can get it in its early stages it can be cured. But, early on there is no pain and oftentimes, people are simply unaware and, unfortunately, aren’t being screened annually or at all,” says Duval.

Oral Cancer has been in the news recently with the disclosures of it by movie critic Roger Ebert. Ebert lost his jawbone to complications from salivary gland cancer and NBA coach George Karl was recently diagnosed with throat cancer. Neither had the HPV virus but McKay notes that there has been a 30 percent increase in the disease since the year 2000.

Anorexia Activism Will Donate All Proceeds From Merchandise Sales To Benefit Tsunami Relief Aid Organizations

Anorexia Activism Will Donate All Proceeds From Merchandise Sales To Benefit Tsunami Relief Aid Organizations

SANTA FE, NM (PRWEB) December 31, 2004

Locally-based, internationally-operating organization, Anorexia Activism announced Wednesday they will be donating all proceeds from merchandise sales to benefit tsunami relief aid organizations. Funds will be donated to UNICEF.

In addition to attending to basic health and safety concerns for tsunami victims, UNICEF is currently working to provide psycho-social support for families traumatized by the disaster. As of press-time, UNICEF has already delivered bedding, clothing, medical supplies, as well as educational tools and recreational items for children in areas damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.

Often, internalized trauma manifests in varying degrees of psychiatric disorders in later years. Research has shown that addressing the emotional well-being of trauma survivors, even in small efforts such as working to restore a sense of normalcy, can be of great psychological benefit immediately as well as in years to come.

Founder and director of Anorexia Activism, Amy Guth, says the decision to give up months of funding was made in order to help “in one of the only ways we are able to give.” Anorexia Activism is an activist and educational outreach organization working to promote media literacy and eating disorders awareness.

To browse Anorexia Activism’s selection of t-shirts, stickers and other items, click on the links and merchandise section of their website. All proceeds from purchases made between now and March 1st, 2004 will benefit UNICEF.

After the Strawberry

After the Strawberry

Lydia Poole wants to be a good person—the kind of person who does everything right and deserves to be loved. To accomplish this, she eats only one cup of Cheerios per day and lets her weight drop below ninety pounds. When Lydia’s sister introduces Jesse, a new friend and filmmaker, Lydia agrees to be the subject of his documentary.

Jesse’s camera follows Lydia as she’s hospitalized for anorexia, as she walks the line between hoping for death and wanting life, as her weight continues to fall. With the camera running, Lydia shifts from the viewfinder’s object to the eye behind the camera. In doing so, she discovers how she wants to see her world.

After the Strawberry is a novel about a girl who disappears while trying to be seen.

What Others Are Saying About After the Strawberry

“Kathryn Pope’s After the Strawberry has everything I want in a novel: elegant, precise prose, unique, unsettling images, and a compelling, disquieting story. It is a work of real menace and real beauty. Not only that, but she somehow manages to combine the traditional pleasures of storytelling with the adventure of hypertext in ways that are lucid and visually startling. All this is testament to the endless range of her wild imagination and genuine talent. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.”

Anxiety Disorder Sufferers Would Choose To Avoid Pills, Survey Shows

Anxiety Disorder Sufferers Would Choose To Avoid Pills, Survey Shows

Chanhassen, MN (PRWEB) January 27, 2006

A majority of anxiety sufferers searching online, are looking for a medication-free solution, according to a recent poll by Anxiety-Aid.com.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health illness in the US, affecting 19.1 million adults (Anxiety Disorders Association of America) and costing the US economy more than $ 42 billion a year.

There are more than 10,000 daily internet searches for anxiety related information according to Overture.com data.

A poll was conducted in December 2005 among people typing anxiety-related terms into search engines.

82.6% of those who responded said they did not believe that anxiety could be cured with drugs. 74% agreed with the statement: “Anxiety can be cured completely without drugs”.

A typical respondent said:

“(I am looking for) anything that can cure me of my anxiety quickly and without medication as medication made it worse.”

And another:

“(I am looking for) no medication techniques to help relieve anxiety”.

Luke Ilech, owner of http://www.anxiety-aid.com said the poll results were surprising.

“We know that many anxiety sufferers look online for self-help information but we were surprised at the attitude to prescription drugs shown by so many in the poll.

“It suggests not only that anxiety sufferers want to avoid pills but they also lack confidence that pills can actually cure them.

“Health care providers should really take note of this and perhaps do their own research to further explore the issue.”

Anxiety-Aid.com is a site that helps people to find self-help solutions to anxiety online. For more information visit http://www.anxiety-aid.com

2009 Conquering Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, and Eating Disorders – The Empowered Patient’s Complete Reference – Diagnosis, Treatment Options, Prognosis (Two CD-ROM Set) Reviews

2009 Conquering Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, and Eating Disorders – The Empowered Patient’s Complete Reference – Diagnosis, Treatment Options, Prognosis (Two CD-ROM Set)

This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of anorexia nervosa and eating disorders. An eating disorder is marked by extremes. It is present when a person experiences severe disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme reduction of food intake or extreme overeating, or feelings of extreme distress or concern about body weight or shape. A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, but at some point, the urge to eat less or more spirals out of control. Eating disorders are very complex, and despite scientific research to understand them, the biological, behavioral and social underpinnings of these illnesses remain elusive. The two main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A third category is “eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS),” which includes several variations of eating disorders. Most of these disorders are similar to anorexia or bulimia but with slightly different characteristics. Binge-eating disorder, which has received increasing research and media attention in recent years, is one type of EDNOS. Women and girls are much more likely than males to develop an eating disorder. Men and boys account for an estimated 5 to 15 percent of patients with anorexia or bulimia and an estimated 35 percent of those with binge-eating disorder. Eating disorders are real, treatable medical illnesses with complex underlying psychological and biological causes. They frequently co-exist with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. People with eating disorders also can suffer from numerous other physical health complications, such as heart conditions or kidney failure, which can lead to death. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable – everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a .95 value! The Encyclopedia presents a collection of official documents about a wide range of medical topics, diseases, illnesses, health and wellness. There is vital information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Cancer Institute, and more. Topics covered include: major diseases, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, blood diseases and disorders, lung diseases, and neurological disorders such as dementia and epilepsy * CDC Health Topics A to Z, Foodborne Illnesses, Infants and Children, Injuries, Occupational Health, Older Adults, Women * CDC Travelers’ Health – Destinations, Vaccinations, Diseases, Mosquito, Tick, Food, Water, Clinics, Yellow Book, Children, Airplanes, Cruise Ships, Special Needs, Relief Workers, * Dietary Guidelines * NIH A to Z from abnormalities to X-rays. Anorexia Eating Disorders Solved by Prayer, According to ChristiaNet Poll

Anorexia Eating Disorders Solved by Prayer, According to ChristiaNet Poll

Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 1, 2007

ChristiaNet.com (http://www.christianet.com), the world’s largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, conducted a new survey asking the question, “Is prayer a solution for anorexia? The majority of participants believe that it is a solution. One participant commented, “Yes, I think prayer is definitely one way that you can overcome anorexia but it isn’t the only way. There is a need for counseling and church support for someone who is struggling with any eating disorder.” (http://www.christianet.com/anorexia/)

Out of 313 participants, 226 answered “yes” to the survey question. Believers seem to understand that prayer is an important element for any problem. Another important element that is talked about from many of those who answered this survey is the component of faith. One Believer commented, “The only solution for anorexia is Jesus and His finished work on the Cross.” Do Christians have faith in Christ and what He accomplished on the Cross? Believers should read God’s Word as a way to increase faith and bring revelation.

President, Bill Cooper, of ChristiaNet offered some advice concerning how to pray. He said, “Christians should ask God for wisdom and guidance.” In order to experience complete healing, God may lead a Believer to seek professional help. God isn’t limited in the way He brings healing to His children. Eating disorders can cause some major health problems and even lead to death. Many of the participants in the survey agreed that seeking medical help may be an important component with the healing process.

Thirty-two readers answered “no” to the survey question and 55 were unsure. One Christian in this group made an interesting point by saying, “Prayer is the prescription and when God presents the medicine we must take it!” God’s answer for healing may include more than one prescription. God understands all things and knows what needs to happen for a complete healing to take place, which leads to the comment of another reader who said, “Faith is very important, and the heart must be ready to receive the blessing of the cure.” The blessing of the cure may not come in the way that is expected but it will come. Ask God and then trust in Him for the answer. For more information, visit: http://www.christianet.com/articles/
