Do You Have an Anxiety Disorder or Suffer From Depression?

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Do you know how it feels to be anxious? The nervousness, heart palpitations and sweating, before they call a business. The churning in the stomach, before you ask the pretty girl on a date. The tension you feel when you speak to a group. Anxiety for some of us is a good thing. It will be our willingness to take action. It makes you study harder for an exam and keeps you alert when a presentation. Basically, it helps us in a state of peak performance – are ready to go. This describes most of us. What about the 19th 1 million people (13 3%) in the U.S. who have an anxiety disorder? Instead of a helpful emotion, anxiety can interfere with normal daily activities and make a person afraid to leave their homes. An anxiety disorder is not just nervous, it is a disease brought on by biological or previous life experiences. Anxiety disorders, people feel anxious most of the time for no apparent reason. These diseases can cause paralysis and prevent the suffering of the implementation of common place and seemingly simple tasks. The joint treatment of anxiety disorders is usually medication, therapy or a combination of both. However, drug therapy only works on 30-45% of the population and then there are the side effects and the apparent dependence on drugs. And what about the rest of the population? Those who do not help the medicine? What should they do, continue to suffer? Everyone has their ups and downs, but for people with depression may outweigh the depths of the UPS. This can cause problems with everyday activities such as eating, sleeping, working, and dealing with friends. Depression not only affects your emotions, but also the way you think, how you behave and how they function physically. Symptoms of depression include, but are not limited to; * Constant feelings of sadness, irritability, tension, or * Decreased interest or pleasure in usual activities or hobbies * Loss of energy, fatigue, despite lack of activity * A change in appetite, with significant weight loss or weight gain * A change in sleeping patterns, such as insomnia, early morning awakening, or sleeping too much * Restlessness or feeling slowed down, * Diminished ability to make decisions or concentrate * Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness or guilt * Thoughts of suicide or death If you experience any of these symptoms, we recommend that you consult your doctor to determine if you suffer from depression. Another affective disorder is dysthymia. People who suffer from it, were down slightly for two years or longer. The symptoms are similar to major depression, except they are less strict. People with Seasonal Affective Disorder symptoms are the same as any form of depression. However, it is the repetition of these symptoms during certain seasons that it separates itself from other forms of depression. Postpartum depression is a type of depression in women who have just given birth can occur. It usually occurs in the first few months after birth, but it can happen to the first year. Women with postpartum depression typically have difficulty bonding with their new born child. Bipolar disorder is another type of depression. Some days a person suffers, it can out of a difficult time even to have out of bed. Then the next day they can really feel good (mania) and then irritated and angry. The person with bipolar disorder have mood swings, sometimes back and forth between depression and mania quickly in the same day or in a short period of time. The type of depression is important as it is treated, so make sure if you made one of the symptoms we have described, suffer, you learn your doctor, or if the immediate situation appears serious, go directly to your hospital emergency room. We believe that alternatives to conventional treatment of anxiety disorders and depression. Assistance not only from drugs, but that alternative methods are proving to be very effective in the long term.

Seasonal Depression and Light Therapy

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

At the beginning of the 1980’s in the United States Professor Rosenthal discovered the benefits of light therapy lamps.  At first they were used in cases of seasonal depression also called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  Light therapy is today practised in a number of hospitals a number of pathologies, but mostly with trouble linked to the upset of the biological clock (circadian rhythm problems) like insomnia and generally trouble sleeping.

Light therapy reveals its effectiveness in numerous cases, and helps to quickly find energy when a lower morale lets us feel the changes in the seasons.

Light therapy lamps and seasonal depression or SAD.  The principal symptoms of winter season depression start to show at the end of summer when the days start to grow short and become dull as there is less light it is the seasonal change that affects a number of people.

In a number of cases it is Winter Blues which we all suffer from in one way or another, it is a simpler version of winter depression, and this in no way stops us from continuing with our daily lives.

In the cases of SAD people will suffer from a depressive state, tiredness and will have a tendancy to isolate themselves socially.  Also noticing a significant rise in their appetite with a tendancy to gain weight or even bulemia due to sweet foods, gloomy humour a tendancy of insomnia and an excessive need of sleep, loss of concentration and motivation with a loss of interest and a loss of out put.  The people suffering from seasonal depression do not automatically show symptoms, this is why it is important to contact a doctor for a check up.  The signs of this depression disappear with the arrival of beautiful days and sunlight.

Light therapy lamps : How does it work?

Light therapy consists of facing a light therapy lamp which transmits light to the eyes. The intensity of the light should be between 2500 and 10 000 lux (light units).  It is the retina via the neurotransmittors that inhibit the melatonin, a sleep hormone which is at the root of the problems linked to a loss of light.  This homone is normally secreted at night for us to sleep. The fact that this sleeping drug is naturally blocked during the day helps us to find out natural energy.

How to use the light therapy lamps

First you have to remember that light therapy lamps used as treatment in hospitals and at home respond in the same way as any normal medecine.  This is why you should verify that the lamps have an agreed EU license.

The origin of light therapy lamps are reserved for medical use (by a GP or at the hospital).  Today light therapy lamps may be used at home, at the office in response to normal usage.

The power will be the first factor in the choice of a lamp, of course the more powerful the lamp the more the use will be a greater comfort.

Each session should be done in the morning.  The user must place the lamp at eye height or just underneath the eyes.  It is not necessary to look at the lamp but it is important that the retina swims in the light coming from the light therapy.

The length of the session must be between 30 minutes and 2 hours (30 minutes at 10 000 lux or 2500 lux for 2 hours).

The effects on the morale can be felt quite quickly, from the first couple of days, but may take 10 days for others.

There are very little indications against light therapy but it is important to consult a doctor when the person suffers with their eyes or is taking photosensitive medication.

You will find all the information you need on light therapy and seasonal depression at Solvital light therapy

Anorexia

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Anorexia is an extremely dangerous and destructive disease. And unfortunately, it is on the rise in women, adolescents and children. As shocking as it may seem, anorexia is now being diagnosed in children as young as six years old. That’s right – little girls who are years away from puberty are starving themselves nearly to death. Conversely, middle-aged women experiencing menopause are also becoming addicted to the same behaviors.

In order for the diagnosis of anorexia to be made, certain criteria must be present. These criteria are listed below. A list of warning signs is also included. If you suspect a friend or family member may be struggling with anorexia, check out this information.

Criteria

  • Low Weight
  • Weight Phobia: Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
  • Body Image Issues: Believing you are fat when you are not, making your weight the only thing you judge yourself on, denying the medical seriousness of your low weight.
  • Loss of menstrual period: For women, who have reached puberty, missing at least three menstrual cycles in a row.
  • Warning Signs for Adolescents & Adults

  • Loss of menstrual period
  • Dieting obsessively when not overweight
  • Claiming to feel “fat” when overweight is not a reality
  • Preoccupation with food, calories, nutrition, and/or cooking
  • Denial of hunger
  • Excessive exercising, being overly active
  • Frequent weighing
  • Strange food-related behaviors
  • Episodes of binge-eating
  • 15% or more below normal body weight/rapid weight loss
  • Depression
  • Slowness of thought/memory difficulties
  • Hair loss
  • In children, any combination of these symptoms should be considered serious. An immediate evaluation by an eating disorder professional or physician is recommended. It’s important to remember, the faster treatment is sought, the better the outcome is for most patients. If you or someone you know is struggling with Anorexia, please call Remuda today at 1-800-445-1900.

How Does a Child Present with Anorexia?

    Friday, March 28th, 2008

It is important to know that anorexia knows no parameters regarding age. Women in their 60’s can experience anorexia onset as easily as girls in their teens. In fact, today children as young as six are being diagnosed with this disease. The following are symptoms:

    • • self starvation
    • • extreme anxiety
    • • depression
    • • inordinate fear of eating, gaining weight and a fear of getting fat
    • • psychological torment
    • • refusal to eat, even though the desire to please parents is strong
    • • persistent food avoidance and weight loss for emotional reasons
    • • body image concerns or obsessions when there is no diagnosis regarding failure to thrive, which can cause growth problems
    • • disturbed parent-child relationships
    • These symptoms are in addition to the classic signs and symptoms of anorexia.

If you know a child who might be struggling with anorexia, please get help today. Contact Remuda Programs at 1-800-445-1900.

    Anorexia Treatment

    Friday, March 28th, 2008

In the United States, eating disorders are far more than prevalent – they’re epidemic. Today, 10 million women and girls have eating disorders and up to one million of them will die from the disorder.

Anorexia, perhaps the most devastating of these diseases, is characterized by self-starvation. People suffering from this disorder literally starve themselves to a state of severe emaciation, and even, death. Although anorexia revolves around food and eating, it is actually a psychiatric illness, not unlike depression or anxiety. As such, professional care is usually required to break the negative behaviors and addiction. Outpatient therapy is usually the first approach to treatment. For the best possible outcome, a woman or girl needs a treatment team. This includes: a primary care physician who can initially assess her medical condition, then monitor her progress; a nutritionist or dietitian who can help her with diet and weight gain; and a therapist who can help her understand the roots of the anorexia and learn new ways to cope with stress and problems in her life. If needed, a psychiatrist, support group or family therapist can be added to the team.

For approximately 70% of eating disorder patients, this treatment proves effective. However, for the other 30%, a higher level of care at an inpatient center is required. This means the patient must live at a residential treatment facility for an extended period of time. In terms of treatment, the American Psychiatric Association has suggested certain guidelines. These include a team approach to therapy, family involvement and treatment of the “whole” person, not just the eating disorder.

Remember, anorexia is an extremely serious disease. Therefore, if you have a friend or family member who may be struggling with anorexia, please get help. Contact Remuda Ranch Programs at 1-800-445-1900.
