This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides the best collection available anywhere of official Federal government information and documents on the subject of anorexia and eating disorders. This CD-ROM uses next-generation search technology that allows complete indexing and makes all files on the disc fully searchable. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material.
An eating disorder is an emotional and physical problem that is associated with an obsession with food, body weight, or body shape. Often, a person with an eating disorder diets, exercises, and/or eats excessively. These behaviors can have serious health consequences and can even be life threatening. The three most common types of eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Each type has its own characteristics and diagnosis.
This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Contents include clinical and medical Information, with information on risk groups, signs, symptoms, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical trials.
In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, as a bonus we have included an encyclopedic collection of general medical and health documents, with extensive material from the CDC, FDA, and NIH on hundreds of diseases. Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we’ve also provided our exclusive “Guide to Leading Medical Websites” with updated links to 73 of the best sites for medical information! By using weblinks on the CD-ROM, you can quickly check for the latest clinical updates directly from the government.
This CD-ROM has over 34,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!
Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents – they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals. (Information on this CD-ROM is not a substitute for professional medical advice; of course, readers are urged to consult with a professional health care provider for any suspected illness.)

This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of anorexia nervosa and eating disorders. An eating disorder is marked by extremes. It is present when a person experiences severe disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme reduction of food intake or extreme overeating, or feelings of extreme distress or concern about body weight or shape. A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, but at some point, the urge to eat less or more spirals out of control. Eating disorders are very complex, and despite scientific research to understand them, the biological, behavioral and social underpinnings of these illnesses remain elusive. The two main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A third category is “eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS),” which includes several variations of eating disorders. Most of these disorders are similar to anorexia or bulimia but with slightly different characteristics. Binge-eating disorder, which has received increasing research and media attention in recent years, is one type of EDNOS. Women and girls are much more likely than males to develop an eating disorder. Men and boys account for an estimated 5 to 15 percent of patients with anorexia or bulimia and an estimated 35 percent of those with binge-eating disorder. Eating disorders are real, treatable medical illnesses with complex underlying psychological and biological causes. They frequently co-exist with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. People with eating disorders also can suffer from numerous other physical health complications, such as heart conditions or kidney failure, which can lead to death. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable – everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others.
In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a .95 value!
Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 1, 2007

ChristiaNet.com (http://www.christianet.com), the world’s largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, conducted a new survey asking the question, “Is prayer a solution for anorexia? The majority of participants believe that it is a solution. One participant commented, “Yes, I think prayer is definitely one way that you can overcome anorexia but it isn’t the only way. There is a need for counseling and church support for someone who is struggling with any eating disorder.” (http://www.christianet.com/anorexia/)

Out of 313 participants, 226 answered “yes” to the survey question. Believers seem to understand that prayer is an important element for any problem. Another important element that is talked about from many of those who answered this survey is the component of faith. One Believer commented, “The only solution for anorexia is Jesus and His finished work on the Cross.” Do Christians have faith in Christ and what He accomplished on the Cross? Believers should read God’s Word as a way to increase faith and bring revelation.

President, Bill Cooper, of ChristiaNet offered some advice concerning how to pray. He said, “Christians should ask God for wisdom and guidance.” In order to experience complete healing, God may lead a Believer to seek professional help. God isn’t limited in the way He brings healing to His children. Eating disorders can cause some major health problems and even lead to death. Many of the participants in the survey agreed that seeking medical help may be an important component with the healing process.

Thirty-two readers answered “no” to the survey question and 55 were unsure. One Christian in this group made an interesting point by saying, “Prayer is the prescription and when God presents the medicine we must take it!” God’s answer for healing may include more than one prescription. God understands all things and knows what needs to happen for a complete healing to take place, which leads to the comment of another reader who said, “Faith is very important, and the heart must be ready to receive the blessing of the cure.” The blessing of the cure may not come in the way that is expected but it will come. Ask God and then trust in Him for the answer. For more information, visit: http://www.christianet.com/articles/

Eating disorders occur most often in young adolescents and teens; however, young children can develop eating disorders as well. Healthcare professionals are seeing a disturbing trend of children as young as age 5 developing eating disorders. While these eating disturbances often seem similar to the anorexia nervosa and bulimia, most commonly found in young teen girls, those occurring at a very young age often have other causes.

Food Refusal

With this disorder, children use food refusal as a means of manipulation. The behavior is often erratic and inconsistent. While this tactic is certainly frustrating for parents, it is sometimes associated with a recent source of stress or sadness and is not usually thought of as a threat to health.

Restrictive Eating

With restrictive eating, very young children eat a variety of foods, but clearly restrict portions. The underlying causes of this disorder remain unclear and although children exhibiting restrictive eating habits may have low weight or growth for their age, they generally eat a balanced diet, albeit portion restricted, causing medical staff to consider them healthy in most cases. As with most eating disturbances in very young children, restrictive eating seems to have no basis in a preoccupation with body image and weight.

Selective Eating

Selective eating disorder syndrome can begin as early as infancy and can mimic the common picky eating habits of many infants and toddlers. Children exhibiting picky eating behavior usually overcome their aversion to other foods relatively quickly before any nutritional threat is imminent. Those with selective eating disorder only eat foods from very narrow categories, often those high in simple carbohydrates.

Recognizing the symptoms of selective eating and taking steps to mitigate negative nutritional and psychological consequences can stop the child from developing a full-blown disorder that threatens health and well-being. Children with true selective eating disorder have an aversion to certain food textures and smells. They associate the texture, odor, or both with a traumatic incident, which they now associate with food. When coaxed to try the food group associated with the event, they often gag, cough, or choke. This disorder is often associated with an underlying psychological condition involving anxiety or autism.

Food Avoidance Emotional Disorder

Children can exhibit symptoms of food avoidance emotional disorder (FAED) very early in life. With this disorder, children can be as thin or thinner than those with untreated anorexia nervosa. The difference being that these children often feel shame at their thin bodies and know that their eating habits are irrational. Symptoms are closely related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many times, children with this disorder do not know exactly why they cannot overcome their eating issues, but desperately want to eat like their peers. They are often plagued with intense worry, sadness, and anxiety. Untreated, atypical eating disorders, such as FAED, can result in profound health and social issues for the child.

Causes of Eating Disorders in Very Young Children

Eating disorders in very young children can often mirror those of adolescents and teens with anorexia nervosa or bulimia, but generally manifest themselves much differently in the mind of the child patient. Anorexics and bulimics usually have profound body image and self-esteem issues because of their emotional stresses. Very young children with eating disorders do not have body image concerns. They exhibit no fear of becoming overweight. These children often have a first or second degree relative with an eating disorder, which indicates a genetic factor in the disease. Many have anxiety disorders and fear of separation from their primary parent (usually their mother). Other contributing factors include perfectionism, inability to effectively cope with daily stresses, and depression marked by tearfulness.

Treatments

Eating disorders in pre-pubescent children are new to prominence in the medical community. Consequently, specific treatments have not been established, but possible treatment options can be administered by a pediatric physician or psychiatrist. Concerned parents can stay informed and involved by keeping regular appointments with their child’s pediatrician. Those who strongly suspect the onset of an eating disorder in their prepubescent child should bring the child in for evaluation by a pediatric psychiatrist. The psychiatric physician may prescribe medication to attenuate the underlying anxiety or obsessive-compulsive condition thought to cause the child difficulty. Both individual and family therapy may benefit the family unit and the child specifically.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 26, 2005

One of the worst aspects of having a child diagnosed with an eating disorder is the isolation. A new web site offers parents a place for mutual support as they negotiate the perils of cooking, eating, and dealing with the emotions of a child with anorexia, bulimia, and similar illnesses.

The free online Parent’s Forum, found at http://www.eatingwithyouranorexic.com, is sponsored by the author of “Eating With Your Anorexic,” published earlier this year by McGraw-Hill. Laura Collins says the web site offers something she wishes she and her husband had when her daughter became ill three years ago.

“I realized early on that I needed the support of other parents who understood what I was going through. But what I found online at many sites was an atmosphere of guilt and hopelessness. Plus, most sites are designed for sufferers, not parents.”

Collins, whose family adopted an approach to their daughter’s care that is family-based and home-centered, did not feel welcome among some online groups.

“It seemed to be wrong, somehow, to be very involved in my child’s care. I was advised to ‘back off’ and to leave all the decisions and information to the professionals to negotiate with my child.”

There is a lag time, Collins asserts, between what is known to researchers in the field and what is available in the media and popular books on the topic.

“Parents don’t cause eating disorders, and a lot of recent research says parents can – and indeed should – be very engaged in the decision-making and care.

“Parents want to hear from other parents about what worked for them, and what to watch out for. We listen to each other, and we instinctually try to share and support each other.”

The “Eating With Your Anorexic” web site offers a Parent Support Forum, a listing of family-friendly treatment centers and clinicians, and research news. There is also information on the site about the approach Collins advocates: the “Maudsley” approach, which originated in the United Kingdom but has now gained converts at Stanford, the University of Chicago, Duke, Children’s Hospital in Denver, and the Boswell Center in Jacksonville, among others.

The Parent’s Forum, which allows its members complete privacy, has attracted a growing number of parents since the web site’s launch. Recent topics have included “Boundaries and privileges,” “finding a Maudsley therapist,” and “high-calorie meal plans.”

One parent expressed their feelings in a recent post: “I’m so glad I found you all!”

Tucson, Arizona (Vocus/PRWEB) February 25, 2011

As part of Sierra Tucson’s commitment to help individuals obtain the treatment they need, the world-class psychiatric hospital and residential treatment center has negotiated contracts with over a dozen insurance providers for the treatment of eating disorders.

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) reports that Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Recognizing the seriousness of eating disorders, Sierra Tucson’s staff has made extra effort to help people who suffer from Anorexia, Buitorial@!plimia, or Binge Eating Disorder/Compulsive Overeating. Contracts have been established with Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Behavioral Health, and ValueOptions, among other insurance companies, to assist patients in accessing the clinically advanced, often life-saving treatment for eating disorders at Sierra Tucson.

A recent news story from CBS Chicago investigated “Eating Disorders and Insurance.” The story conceded, “Eating disorders are an epidemic, with about 11 million people in this country suffering from one. So why are insurance companies increasingly delaying, denying or minimizing coverage for this potentially fatal disease?”

CBS 2 Investigator Dave Savini took a look at how Illinois cases are frequently handled and reported that experts “admit insurance companies are increasingly issuing denials or reducing coverage because of concerns about increasing mental health costs linked to health care reform.”

Cyd Force, CPUR, Sierra Tucson Utilization Review Coordinator, works with insurance companies on a daily basis to advocate for Sierra Tucson’s eating disorder patients. She states, “I provide initial information for pre-certification and negotiate every few days with concurrent updates on patients’ clinical progress.”

Although Sierra Tucson’s staff acknowledges that it has become a greater challenge to get authorization and some instances occur where the patient is denied outright, the staff members’ dedication is evidenced by successfully obtaining assistance for many patients. “We are frequently successful with partial approvals,” says Cyd Force. “Approval is based on medical necessity and is usually given for one week at a time. Patients sometimes receive authorization for an entire 45-day stay, and approval has occurred for up to 65 days.”

Specifically, during the Fourth Quarter 2010, Sierra Tucson performed insurance pre-certification and utilization review for 14 eating disorder patients, 1 of which is still in-house as of this week. Of the 14 insurance cases:

3 were denied (zero days authorized based on not meeting medical necessity)
6 cases were authorized in total
4 cases were partially authorized
1 case did not require pre-certification or review

“Our negotiation of contracts has contributed to many patients receiving help with the necessary treatment for eating disorders,” continues Force. “Some insurance companies follow very stringent criteria, and even within the same company, different states have varying requirements.” She gives credit to United Behavioral Health, ValueOptions, Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Minnesota Blue Cross Blue Shield as examples of companies that consistently work in a collaborative fashion to coordinate care for their clients.
