SANTA FE, NM (PRWEB) December 31, 2004

Locally-based, internationally-operating organization, Anorexia Activism announced Wednesday they will be donating all proceeds from merchandise sales to benefit tsunami relief aid organizations. Funds will be donated to UNICEF.

In addition to attending to basic health and safety concerns for tsunami victims, UNICEF is currently working to provide psycho-social support for families traumatized by the disaster. As of press-time, UNICEF has already delivered bedding, clothing, medical supplies, as well as educational tools and recreational items for children in areas damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.

Often, internalized trauma manifests in varying degrees of psychiatric disorders in later years. Research has shown that addressing the emotional well-being of trauma survivors, even in small efforts such as working to restore a sense of normalcy, can be of great psychological benefit immediately as well as in years to come.

Founder and director of Anorexia Activism, Amy Guth, says the decision to give up months of funding was made in order to help “in one of the only ways we are able to give.” Anorexia Activism is an activist and educational outreach organization working to promote media literacy and eating disorders awareness.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 26, 2005

One of the worst aspects of having a child diagnosed with an eating disorder is the isolation. A new web site offers parents a place for mutual support as they negotiate the perils of cooking, eating, and dealing with the emotions of a child with anorexia, bulimia, and similar illnesses.

The free online Parent’s Forum, found at http://www.eatingwithyouranorexic.com, is sponsored by the author of “Eating With Your Anorexic,” published earlier this year by McGraw-Hill. Laura Collins says the web site offers something she wishes she and her husband had when her daughter became ill three years ago.

“I realized early on that I needed the support of other parents who understood what I was going through. But what I found online at many sites was an atmosphere of guilt and hopelessness. Plus, most sites are designed for sufferers, not parents.”

Collins, whose family adopted an approach to their daughter’s care that is family-based and home-centered, did not feel welcome among some online groups.

“It seemed to be wrong, somehow, to be very involved in my child’s care. I was advised to ‘back off’ and to leave all the decisions and information to the professionals to negotiate with my child.”

There is a lag time, Collins asserts, between what is known to researchers in the field and what is available in the media and popular books on the topic.

“Parents don’t cause eating disorders, and a lot of recent research says parents can – and indeed should – be very engaged in the decision-making and care.

“Parents want to hear from other parents about what worked for them, and what to watch out for. We listen to each other, and we instinctually try to share and support each other.”

The “Eating With Your Anorexic” web site offers a Parent Support Forum, a listing of family-friendly treatment centers and clinicians, and research news. There is also information on the site about the approach Collins advocates: the “Maudsley” approach, which originated in the United Kingdom but has now gained converts at Stanford, the University of Chicago, Duke, Children’s Hospital in Denver, and the Boswell Center in Jacksonville, among others.

The Parent’s Forum, which allows its members complete privacy, has attracted a growing number of parents since the web site’s launch. Recent topics have included “Boundaries and privileges,” “finding a Maudsley therapist,” and “high-calorie meal plans.”

One parent expressed their feelings in a recent post: “I’m so glad I found you all!”

I’ve seen a few of the ‘what I have lost to my eating disorder’ videos. They are all very sad and it’s something that I can really relate to. Eating disorders steal so much from you while at the same time deluding you into thinking that they are all you really want in life. I decided to make a video about what I gained in recovery because sometimes I think it’s easy to slip into a state of despair when you have an eating disorder and feel like you will never get rid of it. Sometimes it’s so hard to maintain the motivation to even *want* to get rid of it. I’m still recovering and I’m not perfect, I slip up now and then. But I have already gained so much from recovery and from deciding that I’d had enough of anorexia. Life is too short to waste like that. Song: More than fine by Switchfood

This is my story of recovery from anorexia and bulimia. After 25 years of struggling with disordered eating, yoga and Vipassana meditation helped me to live more from a place of just being instead of doing. To my surprise a lot of the self-destructive thinking that was tied up with anorexia just fell away, and I got myself back gain. My story is part of a documentary on recovery from disordered eating, “No Numbers: Identity beyond measure” (www.nonumbers.ca) , which looks at the power of storytelling and creativity in reclaiming one’s self and overall well-being.
