This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of anorexia nervosa and eating disorders. An eating disorder is marked by extremes. It is present when a person experiences severe disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme reduction of food intake or extreme overeating, or feelings of extreme distress or concern about body weight or shape. A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, but at some point, the urge to eat less or more spirals out of control. Eating disorders are very complex, and despite scientific research to understand them, the biological, behavioral and social underpinnings of these illnesses remain elusive. The two main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A third category is “eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS),” which includes several variations of eating disorders. Most of these disorders are similar to anorexia or bulimia but with slightly different characteristics. Binge-eating disorder, which has received increasing research and media attention in recent years, is one type of EDNOS. Women and girls are much more likely than males to develop an eating disorder. Men and boys account for an estimated 5 to 15 percent of patients with anorexia or bulimia and an estimated 35 percent of those with binge-eating disorder. Eating disorders are real, treatable medical illnesses with complex underlying psychological and biological causes. They frequently co-exist with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. People with eating disorders also can suffer from numerous other physical health complications, such as heart conditions or kidney failure, which can lead to death. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable – everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a .95 value! The Encyclopedia presents a collection of official documents about a wide range of medical topics, diseases, illnesses, health and wellness. There is vital information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Cancer Institute, and more. Topics covered include: major diseases, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, blood diseases and disorders, lung diseases, and neurological disorders such as dementia and epilepsy * CDC Health Topics A to Z, Foodborne Illnesses, Infants and Children, Injuries, Occupational Health, Older Adults, Women * CDC Travelers’ Health – Destinations, Vaccinations, Diseases, Mosquito, Tick, Food, Water, Clinics, Yellow Book, Children, Airplanes, Cruise Ships, Special Needs, Relief Workers, * Dietary Guidelines * NIH A to Z from abnormalities to X-rays.
		Information on Bulimia Treatment

			By: Brett Fuller
Posted: Mar 04, 2011

Bulimia is an eating disorder, in which a person will eat large amounts of food and will then feel the need to eliminate what has been consumed. After a session of eating huge quantity of food, a bulimic will resort to methods like vomiting, starving for long periods of time and in order to induce vomit, will use substances such as Ipecac.

Bulimia can be caused due to various factors in a person’s life. These factors might be psychological, biological, societal pressures to look thin, family of the individual, any traumatic event and media pressure to look a particular way.

Tucson, Arizona (Vocus/PRWEB) February 25, 2011

As part of Sierra Tucson’s commitment to help individuals obtain the treatment they need, the world-class psychiatric hospital and residential treatment center has negotiated contracts with over a dozen insurance providers for the treatment of eating disorders.

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) reports that Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Recognizing the seriousness of eating disorders, Sierra Tucson’s staff has made extra effort to help people who suffer from Anorexia, Buitorial@!plimia, or Binge Eating Disorder/Compulsive Overeating. Contracts have been established with Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Behavioral Health, and ValueOptions, among other insurance companies, to assist patients in accessing the clinically advanced, often life-saving treatment for eating disorders at Sierra Tucson.

A recent news story from CBS Chicago investigated “Eating Disorders and Insurance.” The story conceded, “Eating disorders are an epidemic, with about 11 million people in this country suffering from one. So why are insurance companies increasingly delaying, denying or minimizing coverage for this potentially fatal disease?”

CBS 2 Investigator Dave Savini took a look at how Illinois cases are frequently handled and reported that experts “admit insurance companies are increasingly issuing denials or reducing coverage because of concerns about increasing mental health costs linked to health care reform.”

Cyd Force, CPUR, Sierra Tucson Utilization Review Coordinator, works with insurance companies on a daily basis to advocate for Sierra Tucson’s eating disorder patients. She states, “I provide initial information for pre-certification and negotiate every few days with concurrent updates on patients’ clinical progress.”

Although Sierra Tucson’s staff acknowledges that it has become a greater challenge to get authorization and some instances occur where the patient is denied outright, the staff members’ dedication is evidenced by successfully obtaining assistance for many patients. “We are frequently successful with partial approvals,” says Cyd Force. “Approval is based on medical necessity and is usually given for one week at a time. Patients sometimes receive authorization for an entire 45-day stay, and approval has occurred for up to 65 days.”

Specifically, during the Fourth Quarter 2010, Sierra Tucson performed insurance pre-certification and utilization review for 14 eating disorder patients, 1 of which is still in-house as of this week. Of the 14 insurance cases:

3 were denied (zero days authorized based on not meeting medical necessity)
6 cases were authorized in total
4 cases were partially authorized
1 case did not require pre-certification or review

“Our negotiation of contracts has contributed to many patients receiving help with the necessary treatment for eating disorders,” continues Force. “Some insurance companies follow very stringent criteria, and even within the same company, different states have varying requirements.” She gives credit to United Behavioral Health, ValueOptions, Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Minnesota Blue Cross Blue Shield as examples of companies that consistently work in a collaborative fashion to coordinate care for their clients.

The number of cases of anorexia and bulimia has reached alarming proportions and many parents are concerned about their child ending up with an eating disorder. Our cultural and societal standards of perfection and extreme over functioning can cause many young girls to feel they do not measure up. In adolescence, individuals begin to associate body shape with self esteem and may feel inferior if they cannot look like their favorite actor or model. While their body is growing and changing, emotions and hormones are also creating internal imbalances. Without loving support and guidance about healthy eating habits and healthy self and body image many young adults turn to extreme measures to feel in control of their bodies and thus their lives.

Eating Disorders Require Emergency Attention

Eating disorders need to be diagnosed quickly and adequately treated in a specialized treatment center. There are several centers involved in anorexia and bulimia treatment in Missouri. These centers offer intensive outpatient, day and residential treatment programs depending on the severity of the eating disorder. The treatment focuses on building a collaborative relationship among the affected person, the nutritionist, the psychologist and other physicians. The treatment involves physical and psychological intervention in a compassionate environment.

Very often these eating disorders are a result of underlying psychological issues such as a low self esteem, perfectionism, co-morbid psychiatric disorders such as depression or anxiety, unresolved trauma or problematic family dynamics. These various reasons are identified and treated adequately by experienced therapists. The obsession with body image is also explored and clients are taught how to accept their body and feel comfortable in their own skin.

The prevalence of eating disorder cases as well as the awareness of eating disorders has increased dramatically recently. Eating disorders are mental disorders that cause a person to experience obsessions and compulsions around their body and food. People suffering from eating disorders struggle with distorted body perception and are unable to see themselves or their body accurately. Often they use eating disorder behaviors to increase the perception of control over emotions and life experiences. The most common types of eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder.

Eating Disorders Require Immediate Attention

Eating disorders require treatment as soon as they are diagnosed. Due to the shame surrounding the disorder, the person typically hides the disorder and protects the addiction at all costs. This may make accurate diagnosis and treatment difficult. Intervention by family and friends is often necessary to help a person seek treatment. Due to the drastic health implications and life threatening situations that can arise out of an eating disorder, treatment must be thorough and comprehensive.

Receive Care in Dedicated Anorexia and Bulimia Treatment Centers

There are numerous anorexia and bulimia treatment centers with the increase in the occurrence and diagnosis of such eating disorders. These centers have a team of specialists who work along with the affected people to provide compassionate care. Treatment must include medical and weight stabilization along with psychotherapy, as the underlying causes of these eating disorders must be explored and resolved. A nutritionist helps implement the appropriate nutrition needed and the body weight is restored to normal with proper eating habits. Both individual and group therapy are aspects of the treatment programs and help to re-establish the person into life and relationships.

The increase in the prevalence of eating disorders in the past decade is a cause for concern and as a society we must take notice and work to change our attitudes about body and health. Eating disorders develop more commonly in young adults as they struggle to form self identity and body acceptance. There are several types of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating, and binge eating.

Early Diagnosis Helps Quicker and More Effective Recovery

All eating disorders need adequate treatment. Bulimia needs to be treated after detections and diagnosis as the disorder can have serious health implications and can even reach life-threatening proportions. Diagnosis often takes time as the affected person does not acknowledge the disorder willingly. A person affected by bulimia is caught up in a vicious cycle of binging followed by purging. This is often done in secret, and because their may be no change in body weight or size, it can be difficult to diagnose. Bulimia treatment and recovery is possible if treated comprehensively after diagnosis. The treatment is carried out in specialized centers and can be outpatient, day or residential depending on the severity of the disorder.

Treatment centers should provide a safe and comforting environment where the person participates in various therapy sessions and modalities of therapy. These therapies are both individual and group. The affected person is treated physically as well as psychologically. It is very important to normalize the body weight with regulate food intake and exercise. It is equally important to find out the underlying causes which led to the eating disorder in the first place. These emotional reasons are to be handled with delicacy and treated accordingly.

Experienced Caregivers Ensure the Best Bulimia Treatment

The patient is encouraged to interact with similarly affected people in the treatment center and is also encouraged to help others with eating disorders. Therapy is focused on developing a sense of self separate from the eating disorder identity and distortions. The family is also involved in the treatment and asked to provide maximum support to the person. Regular follow up sessions are scheduled to prevent relapse.
